Pollock hardware a main Street mainstay since 1922, is scheduled to close its doors for Good on saturday. Wayne and Lois Cash have owned the store for nearly 15 years but after putting it and the property up for Sale last year for $ 369,000 and receiving not a single offer they decided to move to plan b. Ism very disappointed a buyer did not come Forward Wayne Cash said. There Are a lot of customers who weave known for years but you make a decision and you move on. Theress a Point where you say enough is enough. You cant work All your life. Some of their customers Are looking to mobilize literally and financially to keep Pollock hardware a going concern. John Loxley a University of Manitoba economics professor who lives nearby said he and a growing group of other Neighbours Are investigating the possibility of turning it into a retail co operative. We have a Long Way to go and unfortunately Pollock is winding Down he said. The group has put a sign up Sheet in the store and sent out e mails to other Long time customers to gauge interest in taking the store Over. Loxley has also met with seed Winnipeg a local Micro Bank to see about financing possibilities. He said the groups due Diligence will include looking at pollocks books to ensure its viable. Cash said theress no question its a Money maker. We made a living at it. I was in the printing business for 50 years with no pension. We bought the store 15 years ago so we could retire he said noting he and Lois Are hoping to make More use of their cottage at Winnipeg Beach in the coming years. Cash said he thinks the Coop possibility is an excellent idea but wishes the group had moved on it sooner. They re a Fine Bunch of people we know them Well he said noting the store has three full time employees. If the Coop idea does not Fly Cash said he and his wife will return to the store after Christmas and auction off the remaining items. Following that the building and land will be put up for Sale he said. John Melnyk a Long time North end resident is hopeful a solution will be found. He said he has fond memories of going to Pollock hardware with his dad in the 1960s. You could go in there with a broken something maybe you could Only bring half of it in and you might not even really know what it was and the eyed find one for you. You could find things there that you find anywhere else he said. Whenever something goes wrong at my dads House hers 92 and still lives in the North end it does not matter what it is he says go to pollocks and get another a he said. Louise another Long time Pollock customer who did not want her last name used said it would be a shame if customers had to take their business to the big Box stores. Pollocks is one of the few places i can walk my dog into the store and everybody greets him. If i bring in a window screen or an old lamp that needs to be fixed or i need a Doo Hickey replaced they do it right and give me advice. If i went to Home depot with a broken part the eyed either not know what it was or the eyed make me buy a Box of 20 of them she said. Geoff. Kirbyson free press. My. Ca by Geoff Kirbyson the University of Manitoba students Union received an Early Christmas present sunday night. Rachel Heinrichs vice president of advocacy at Umsu was handed a Cheque for $ 2,000 by nursing student Candy Allen to cover the last of its costs in doling out 122 Christmas hampers to u of m students in need. Ism so shocked and amazed Heinrichs said. Were still waiting for a few Bills to come in for groceries but this should bring us pretty close to our target. Allen said she was moved to make the donation after Reading about the approximately $ 2,000 shortfall in the free press on sunday. I did not know this need existed. I was so Busy trying to pass my exams i a snot watching for people who were having trouble she said. You have to look through the Lens of social Justice and understand that those of us who have Are our Brothers keepers. If i can do without and somebody else needs it Isnit that what its All about maybe other people will come Forward and support these kids. They re going to make the world i grow old in. Allen said she was planning to visit the three Canada Safeway stores Between her House and the fort Garry Campus on monday to solicit donations for the u of m food Bank too. She said her Only concern was the reaction of her four children at Home. Ism afraid they re going to say if mom has $ 2,000 to give away to stranger what does she have for us a she said. Heinrichs said Sheds still expecting to get some last minute Calls for hampers before the u of m shuts Down for the Christmas break on Friday. If we have the resources we will try to do whatever we can to help them out. We might have a handful of turkeys left Over she said adding she is still accepting monetary donations for the hamper program. Heinrichs said the demand for hampers doubled from a year ago. She said adding Christmas presents this year led to a significant portion of the deficit. About 150 toys were needed but Only 60 were donated leaving Umsu on the Hook for the remaining 90. Heinrichs and a group of student volunteers spent most of their weekend delivering the hampers to students All Over Winnipeg. The last 48 hours have been a mad Rush she said. Heinrichs said Umsu raised about $ 7,500 for the Christmas hampers from students and staff most of it during a fundraising Blitz in november. Geoff. Kirbyson free press. My.
