Relatives of the slain members of the Public and even some mounties Are speaking out about staff shortages the Lack of a formal backup policy for officers and the posting of rookies to Small Rural detachments. After More than 10 years of internal reviews its time for the ramp to bolster the safety of officers regardless of the Cost they say. They need More members in the detachments. In isolated posts they should have two members going out to every single Call said Jodie Worden widow of const. Christopher Worden 30, who was gunned Down in october in Hay River n. W. T., while responding alone to a trouble Call. A month after word ends death const. Douglas Scott 20, was fatally shot while responding alone to a drunk driving Call in Kimmirut Nunavut. Scott was barely out of the ramp training depot. The killings have prompted More than 550 canadians to sign a petition that says the loss of officers is unacceptable and Calls on the government to bankroll any policy changes that would Lead to two officers being dispatched for every Call. One mountie serving in a Small Post in the n. W. Said any new backup policy should include the hiring of More officers. Talking to friends and colleagues has shown me that every detachment in the n. W. T., if not the North is running Short of manpower he wrote in a posting on the internet. Sources say the new proposal would make it mandatory for two officers to respond to Calls whenever there is a threat of violence if the Call involves a Domestic dispute when officers would be out of radio Contact when people May have Access to firearms or other weapons or if the person involved has a history of mental or behavioural problems. The policy would require some of duty officers to be on official standby near a phone or radio. It could also Lead to what the ramp Call hubbing closing some Small outposts and redeploying staff to bolster other detachments. Ramp Deputy commissioner Bill Sweeney has said a new backup policy could Cost tens of millions of dollars and take time to Roll out. Any changes involving increased funding would require consultation with territorial and provincial governments which pay 70 per cent of the Cost of ramp services in Small Rural communities and Remote areas. Backup is Only one of the problems that have come to the forefront As a result of recent mountie deaths. Const. Scott had not completed All of his Field training before he was posted to Kimmirut a practice that the ramp were criticized for in the 2005 auditor generals report. Scotts Uncle staff sgt. Christopher Scott of the Kingston police said he has heard that up to 40 per cent of staff in the North have less than five years experience. I would like to see Young officers not be deployed to the North until they have had an Opportunity to hone their skills.
