act of kindness sparked cherished memory
i was recently listening to an expert talk on Csc radio about a new Dis covery regarding memory. The researcher said that we tend to emotionally embellish our past. Some times when we remember cer Tain things ? like moms Apple pie for example ? we do so with More fondness than it deserves. So they say. But i would argue there Are some memories that Are so genuinely Sweet real and meaningful that we never forget them. I mean never Ever. For Jack Aron a jewish tailor who grew up As an orphan in Europe one of the most cherished memories was a gift he received just before Christmas 1965. A gift that came from his own giving. Back in the mid-1960s, Aron used to see a Mother and her handicapped son making their Way Home past his shop at notre Dame Avenue and Arlington Street. What impressed him he would later say was How devoted the Mother was to her son. How she loved him and kept him in spite of his Handicap. Her Devotion so moved him that five Days before Christmas ? 42 years ago today ? Jack Aron went to their Home at 1480 Erin St. And delivered a gift. That same evening the Mother sat Down with a pen and wrote the follow ing. Or. Or. Aron Francis and i just Don to know How to thank you for your kindness in bring ing us that Lovely hamper this evening. It is one of the loveliest things that Ever happened to us. We shall Pray that god will richly repay your kindness to a widow and her son and i know that he will. Very sincerely . Holden and Francis. For some reason that simple Loving thank you and prayer was so meaningful that Aron saved the note. Perhaps it was because he was an orphan and it was As if she were the Mother he always needed. In any event shortly after Jack Aron met and married a former nun in 1981, Aline Trudeau Aron placed the note in a scrapbook of memories and honours bestowed upon her husband. Honours and keepsakes that ranged from his Devotion to big Brothers to his prowess at Bowling. Throughout the years Jack Aron would speak of the thank you note from the Mother As if it were the sweetest memory in his life. He was always saying remember that lady Aline said. Want that a Nice letter she wrote to me he looked at that letter so As Aline recounted the Story what struck me about the note and its Impact was How simple Short and Gra Cious it was. And How it Cost nothing but the time it took to write. There a a lesson in that especially at this time of year when the presents we give tend to be judged by the amount of Money we spend on them. Anyway Aline contacted me wednesday because she wondered whatever happened to the widow Holden and her son Francis. She can to find them. And Aline wanted to bring closure to the kindness because As my col league Lindor Reynolds reported Jack Aron died last month. He was 96. Which suggests mrs. Holden sprayer that god will richly repay your kindness was answered. Because Given his age the kindly tailor was relatively healthy for most of his Long life. That is until the final year when dementia gradually descended like a dark curtain. Yet for reasons even he might not have fully understood Jack Aron liked to hold that note and read it. In this Case i Don to think it was As the experts might contend that the memory was emotionally embellished. I think it was simply that the note and what it said was so important to Jack Aron that As i said he never Ever forgot it. Even As he slipped into dementia.
