Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - December 21, 2007, Winnipeg, Manitoba a8 Winnipeg free press Friday december 21, 2007 Manitoba global greetings Winni Eggers working abroad Send their Christmas wishes not everyone wants to be Home for the holidays. We asked a few Winni Eggers to share Why they be chosen to be elsewhere at this time of year and How they la be spending the season. Midwife Nathalie Pambrun is volunteering in adre Chad this Christmas. Nathalie Pambrun midwife in adre Chad i f i were in Winnipeg for Christmas this year i would definitely be Cele Brating with my family the traditional French a Veillon spending time with friends and would probably be on Call for my midwifery group waiting for the baby who wants to be born in the Middle of celebrations. This year will be a Little different As i am in Chad on Mission with a Pecins sans Fronti res doctors without Borders. I have been in adre since the end of september using my midwifery skills to assist in the development of a reproductive health care program at the local Hospital. Most women in Chad give birth without Access to proper medical care. The estimated chances of death due to labour for a chadian woman in the course of her life is 1 in 11. This is one of the highest in the world. Reducing the prevalence of maternal and neonatal morbidity and mortality is one of mss s main project objectives Here in adre. Adre is situated on the Border of Sudan in the sub Sahara. Mss has been Here since 2004. The current mss team is quite diverse. We Are 12 peo ple a mix of medical logistical and administrative staff from All Over the world Ivory coast Guinea France Uzbekistan Switzerland Italy and Canada. Christmas Here will probably be a mix of everyone a traditions. We have already started a ration of cheese wine chocolate and foie gras and will All certainly be awaiting parcels from Home. As most of the population is Muslim the local festivities will take place shortly before Christ Mas. So if Security permits and there Are no Urgen cies at the Hospital we plan to have a picnic including the traditional feast of sheep cooked in the ground with a couscous stuffing and a Good game of Petacque French game similar to Lawn Bowling and a few skits and storytelling. While this will be quite different from my usual traditions i am certain to never have a Christmas like this one again. Continued on next Page ;
