Alcohol based hand cleaners Are not to be used with students within our division because they Are highly flammable and potentially fatal if ingested school division nurse educator Kerry Heather has told the divisions 77 schools. Theress certainly concern about students setting them aflame and there is concern that students could Burn themselves if they a vent dried their hands completely after using such dispensers Heather said in an interview. Students who insert an electrical plug could set off a spark and cause a fire on their hands she said. They could Hurt themselves in a science lab or if they go outside for a cigarette if they still have the alcohol based material on their hands. Absolutely any time you re going to add fuel if it Isnit used properly she said noting that Burns have been suffered in health care facilities. While its outside heathers area of responsibility she acknowledged there is concern that the adult population that has drug seeking behaviour might seek this out. Any alcohol based hand Sanitizer to be effective has to be at least 60 per cent alcohol. Most Are 70 to 80 per cent Heather said. It has much More alcohol than Vodka. Heather said the school division did not have any of the dispensers which allow people to clean their hands without water and a sink. She researched the subject and issued the directive after some school staff asked about buying and installing the devices. Our Nursery students the four and five year Olds they might like the smell so they might lick their hands Heather said. It Only takes a Little to be toxic. While there Are alcohol free alternatives available Heather said she wants schools to encourage students to use soap and water. All our schools have running water and soap she pointed out. It dispensers would be convenient but it does not Mirror the Behaviours we want our students to use. The dispensers May work on bacteria but they dont clean As Well As soap and water Heather said. That could be a serious problem for an allergic student who got Peanut butter or another allergen on her Finger. The Sanitizer remove the allergen protein from hands Heather said. The Public school systems safety expert was surprised at the school divisions ban. Keith Thomas said he is aware that Winnipeg school division has banned the devices but some other divisions have installed them in school hallways. We know they do contain an alcohol Type substance Thomas said. An official with the Winnipeg regional health authority said they re in All our hospitals. Hospitals have a different level of infection control. The health authority official said the medical officer of health prefers that children use soap and water to Wash their hands but would not comment on the alcohol based dispensers potential flammability or Security issues about substance abuse.
