t he Sunshine fund set out to Send 1,000 kids to Camp this summer and even though it did not reach that goal its still thrilled with what it has achieved so far this year. We sent 868 kids this year said Bryan Zako executive director at the Manitoba camping association. Although we fell Short we had 359 More kids placed through the Sunshine fund than we did last year. Even though its not 1,000, its pretty darn close. Its the highest number weave had since 2004, so were pretty pleased. And that brings the total number of kids sent to Camp since the launch of the Sunshine fund in 1979 to 18,845. This year the organization had about 300 More applications than it did last year which Zako attributes to working with schools and child and family services which have been Able to provide More information about the Sunshine fund to families in financial need. The average Cost of sending a child to Camp today is More than it was Many years ago. To Send each one of those 868 kids to Camp this year was $ 330 per child so the total Cost for All those kids placed was $ 286,229, Zako said. The total amount of funding from All sources As of right now is $ 265,632, so that leaves us at a bit of a shortfall. Were looking to raise about $ 20,000 throughout the rest of the year to help cover the Cost and every Dollar goes a Long Way. Of the $ 265,632 the Sunshine fund has raised so far this year More than $ 17,000 came from the Sunshine Day it put on in partnership with a w at the end of May. All proceeds from Coffee and Root Beer sold that Day helped Send Manitoba kids to Camp. Other donations have come in from thousands of generous Manitoban Manitoba culture heritage tourism and sport the Manitoba Moose Piston ring the Winnipeg foundation and the Winnipeg free press. Margo Goodhand editor of the Winnipeg free pres said the paper has been working with the Sunshine fund since the beginning and will continue to work with it As it embarks on their 30th anniversary next year. I have very fond memories of Camp and if every child gets a Chance to do that its a life transforming experience. I just Hope people will find it in their hearts to dig deep and help them out. Zako said its been a successful year but that its not Over yet As they re still trying to create More awareness and raise the final $ 20,000 to help cover Camp costs.
