W Ayne Gretzky and my family have been inexplicably linked for More than 13 years. After my Grandfather Bill Kirbyson passed away in the summer of 1995, my parents Ron and Dawn and sister Jill had the unenviable task of cleaning out his House and preparing it for Sale. I was going to school in London ont., at the time and was not pressed into duty among the Many photo albums dishes furniture and keepsakes was a White and red never Bee used wooden Titan super 99 hockey stick that was rescued from the basement. My mom thought i could use it to play in my Beer league but my dad noticed it was a left handed stick and he knew i was a right handed shot. Before it could be placed in the give away pile he turned the Blade Over and realized we could never throw it out. There in dark Blue permanent Marker was the unmistakable signature of none other than Gretzky himself followed by 99. My grandpa a snot a collector of sports Memorabilia and nobody could remember him going to a game without at least one of us so surely we would have remembered if he had lined up with a Bunch of kids waiting for an autograph. Even if it had been Given to him he would have mentioned it to us at some Point he we were stumped How the stick came into his Possession and we remained in the dark until wednesday night. With Gretzky in town coaching the Phoenix coyotes against the Calgary flames Here was my Opportunity to try and piece the Sticks journey together. I did not expect Gretzky to remember handing it Over to my grandpa More than two decades ago if that was indeed How he got it. But maybe no. 99 could shed some Light on things. After All the stick had once been in his hands. I knew when i called the coyotes Media relations people that my request was unusual. I hoped they would at least get the message to him and that it might tug on Gretzky is familial Heartstrings. Family was extremely important to him and ism sure Many canadians know More about his grandparents parents and siblings through countless stories written about the great ones career than they did about their own families. My grandpa used to regale me with hockey stories of when he was a kid. The one that always stuck with me was How he once nearly lost an ear when a falling players skate sliced him open. Old school hockey naturally meant he got stitched up on the Bench and barely missed a shift. I was never sure if he was pulling my leg or not. A week after my initial request to speak to Gretzky i had heard nothing. But on my Way to the rink i was taking my seven year old son Alex to the game anyway i got a Call from Sergey Kocharov the coyotes director of Media relations. Wayne will do it he said. Meet me outside the dressing room five minutes after the game. I did a Quick 180 and raced Home to grab the stick which we left in the car during the game. We retrieved it during the third period went through Security and Kocharov took us to meet Gretzky after head finished his Media scrum. As i explained the situation Gretzky took the stick out of my hand As though he was being reunited with an old Friend. Its not a game stick he said As he examined it from head to toe pausing to look at his signature. It must have been a promotion Titan did. Maybe your grandpa got it through a contest. He paused. Definitely some sort of contest he won it in 1982 to 1985. I said i realized he had signed a zillion Sticks in his life but he Cut me off. Not of these. There would have been a limited number. Ism guessing 99 of them he said. I asked Gretzky about his signature on the Blade remembering a Story i had read years ago How he had three signatures one for signing things for friends or charities one for signing items in an endless line of fans and one for when hers walking to the team bus after keeping everybody else waiting. Thatus a Good signature he said. Thatus what my signature looked like Back then he said pointing to the replica on the Sticks Shaft As proof. Then Gretzky the father turned to Alex and said youve got some heavy eyes there Bud. You got school tomorrow yeah Alex replied with a shy Grin. Lets take a picture Gretzky suggested pulling Alex Over making sure the stick was in the shot. After double checking if the stick belonged to my Grandfather or Alex Gretzky handed it Back to me. They should go Back to Wood Sticks he said. The new Sticks Are crap. Geoff. Kirbyson free press. My.
