Please Recycle. I tvs one of the great ethical dilemmas in journalism today. If a world famous distillery sends you three free bottles of Irish whisky Are you obligated to share them with your newsroom colleagues i would say the answer is yes but Only if the other journalists in the office Are tall enough to see Over the Walls of your cubicle in which Case you wont have any Choice because your desk will quickly be surrounded by a jealous horde of reporters and editors with paper cups in their hands and a demented look on their faces. At least thatus what happened to me. There is an excellent journalistic reason for Why this came about. The reason is my buddy Boris who also happens to be our entertainment editor enjoys putting me in situations in which i will end up looking like an idiot or sustain serious damage to medically important organs such As my liver. So when the Nice folks who make Bushmills Irish whiskey e mailed him to ask whether anyone in our office would like to sit in front of a computer and take part in their first Ever online whiskey tasting to celebrate the 400th anniversary of them getting their Royal licence Boris knew just the Man for the Job. Unfortunately that Guy a snot available so Boris agreed to let me do it instead. And so there i was on tuesday sitting in my cubicle in the Middle of a crowded newsroom in the Middle of the Day with three complimentary bottles of Irish whisky and three Crystal glasses parked in the Middle of my desk. I should Point out Here that my desk is stuck in the Middle of our business department so it was clearly wrong of me to conduct the tasting there. In Hindsight i should have done it in the sports department because most of those Guys Arentt around in the daytime. You will be surprised to hear this but i normally do not drink significant quantities of whisky in our office. We probably have a policy on this. Still it was a unique experience. It worked kind of like a conference Call except on my computer. I was one of about 15 journalists around the country who logged on to a special website that allowed us to watch and Type in hard hitting questions As Darryl Mcnally the manager at Ireland is oldest distillery guided us in a product knowledge sampling seminar of three whisky Bushmills original Black Bush and Bushmills 10 year old malt. If you had been in our office what you would have seen is a Bunch of real journalists striding purposefully about the newsroom and off in a Corner there would be me with a Glass of whisky in one hand a pen in the other and the Side of my head squished Flat against the computer screen because the volume go any higher and thatus the Only Way i could hear a word Darryl said. What i did hear was fascinating partly because Darryl has a very impressive Irish accent but mainly because As you have already guessed i fancy myself something of a connoisseur in the vital area of liquor that i cannot actually afford to buy. The Way it worked was Darryl would swirl a whiskey in his Glass sniff it take a sip and then explain to the rest of us what we should be tasting. He would say something like this is our gentle giant. Its Friendly like a warm Irish Welcome with Vanilla notes developing into Vanilla ice Cream and crime Bra Lee. Or this is our loveable rogue. It has a big Rich Fruitcake Aroma with Christmas cake notes. It floats on your Tongue without touching it. Personally ism pretty sure i Felt everything touching my Tongue and most of my internal organs. My tasting technique involved the following two Steps 1 make a thoughtful expression to convey the idea that it is Normal for me to drink free alcohol at my desk and 2 try to look nonchalant As steam poured out my ears due to the fact my oesophagus was on fire. Out of journalistic fairness i will confess Here that i had the following professional reaction to All three whisky Mem Mumm. Yummy in Between taking sips and trying to hear what Darryl was saying i dispensed shots to my newsroom colleagues As they dangled paper cups Over the top of my cubicle. Here Are a few of their insightful comments Deputy editor Julie Carl i dont have a sense of smell. I know its not scotch. I know its not Vodka. Editor Margo Goodhand grimacing ohm gawd it tastes like the Bottom of a stable Day editor Shane Minkin my Mem Medicine a but in a Good Way. Night editor Dave Connors weird but not in a bad Way. Tab editor Jill Wilson it tastes like burning. My lips Are a bit numb. City editor Paul Samyn in an Irish accent Manly yes but i like it too reporter Geoff Kirbyson in a choked whisper ism getting a warm and sexy feeling All Over. Looking at me May i say you Are much better looking since i tried this. So its a bit of an acquired taste. Still speaking As someone with a sophisticated palate i think this whole drinking free whisky at work thing worked out quite Well. And because i believe so strongly in the Public cos right to know i am willing to put my palate on the line and Sample any other expensive spirits that Are sent to me free of charge. And you thought journalism was easy. Doug. Speirs free press. My.
