The York Avenue building was the biggest convention Centre in Canada when it was built in 1974. But its elite status disappeared after other cities built facilities of their own. Since 2001, the Winnipeg convention Centre has been warning politicians it needed to expand in order to compete with new or renovated convention centres in other Canadian cities.
