At the same time its also open to people looking after youngsters who Are sick or disabled who receive palliative care and others needing care or supervision for periods of More than three months. Irvin Ross said to qualify the caregiver must be looking after someone who is a client of Manitoba Home care. There Are about 39,000 Home care clients in the province. To also qualify a caregiver must perform tasks like bathing dressing preparing meals transporting and obtaining medical care. It includes people living with a disability a life threatening illness or needing care and supervision for More than three months. Norma Kirkby program director with the alzheimer society of Manitoba said the tax credit can be used by a caregiver to pay for extra respite care or Purchase a medical devices to help them look after an elderly Parent. Kirkby said the caregiver can also spend the savings on themselves be it a Golf game a movie or a pedicure to get re energized. There Are other ways to think of respite Kirkby said. The credit will also help to cover a caregivers out of pocket expenses such As the costs of taking someone to a doctors appointment or on recreational outings. Suzanne Swanton executive director of continuity care a non profit group which supports families with a disabled family member called the new tax credit a step in the right direction. This announcement is a positive step towards recognizing the importance and value of unpaid care providers in our society. Parents family members and friends Are often the ones providing care and assistance to their loved ones. But Swanton said the tax credit will not cover the caregivers of All children and adults with disabilities. The caregiver credit will apply to those individuals who Are receiving Home care but there Are Many others who do not Quality for this program and still depend on others to meet their daily needs she said. The client must be assessed by Manitoba Home care As requiring care Levels 2, 3, or 4 while living at Home. Examples include those with a disability Young or old those receiving palliative care and others needing care or supervision for periods of More than three months. Level 1 requires minimal care and level 4 requires maximum daily support. Home care clients Are assessed in six areas based on level of care in tasks like bathing dressing eating meals mobility medical care and supervision. After a three month qualify. I no period the refundable credit is $ 85 per month to a maximum $ 1,020 per year to the primary caregiver of each client. A caregiver May not earn the credit for More than three clients in a Given month.
