U usually when Church folks talk about finances the conversation includes asking everyone to dig a Little deeper. But there wont be any solicitation for funds at an upcoming conference on mennonites and Money promises organizer Royden Loewen of the University of Winnipeg. Instead the two Day free event on thursday oct. 9 and Friday oct. 10 will be loaded with discussions about attitudes toward Money and How one eth no cultural group has dealt with wealth and poverty Over its 500 year history says Loewen chair of the University yes mennonite studies department. The very intention is to look at the phenomenon of Money and greed to understand How we have dealt with Money in the Western world says Loewen who says the Only request for Cash next weekend May be asking participants to throw change into the Coffee fund. Many mennonites have found themselves to their Surprise in wealth and not known what to do and Many mennonites have found themselves in poverty and not known what to do with that either although mennonites have dealt with cycles of being Rich and poor often because of relocation and immigration their roots Are based in principles of simplicity and humility. Menno Simons the 16th Century founder of the protestant sect urged his followers against excess and wealth says Loewen. His concern was the relationship with god he says his concern was that greed and the status that came with Money was an obstacle to humility and simplicity. Simonsj admonitions still ring True today especially in the faces of the current credit crunch says a religious studies professor from Mcmaster University. At its most Radical the mennonite perspective rejects the premise that Money is the principle of Exchange in their Economy says Kroeker a former Winnipeg Ger raised mennonite and now attending a presbyterian Church. If you think your Security is found in that kinds of Possession that stockpiling of your asset you re going to be hooked by the very anxiety that is driving so much of our Economy. The individualistic capitalistic culture of the Western world contradict the teachings of Jesus Christ which connects Faith with economic and social practices says Kroeker and that Isnit always a popular message. The question is whether 21st Century christians Are willing to hear that he asks. Were so corrupted in the Way things Are. As a religious and cultural group mennonites have had to juggle their beliefs in simplicity and humility with living in a capitalist culture that promotes Success and wealth says Loewen. In to Days society Money equals status and status contradicts humility he says. Today Many mennonites have very intentionally sought to control the lure of Money and work for the common Good. Yet no one should believe that All mennonites Are closet Amish who turn their backs on the ways of the world says an anthropologist from new zealand who has written two books on mennonites. From the outset there have been Urban me nos involved in business and Industry. But this involvement was restricted by external circumstances where they could flourish they flourished says James Urry in an e mail interview. Urry says poverty in mennonite communities has usually been caused More by external circumstances such As revolutions and War than internal factors but those circumstances were the catalyst for organizations like mennonite Central committee which provides Aid on a global scale.
