T free Winnipeg free press journalists received major awards for agricultural journalism and photography by the Canadian farm writers federation awards this past weekend. The same photo won Hossack a National newspaper award nomination and received first place in the pictorial category for the pictures of the year contest sponsored by the news photographers association of Canada who says lightning does not strike twice it struck three times now Hossack said. This is the third major award this picture has won in the last seven or eight months so its an honour but its rather amazing that it continues to get recognition. The Art of capturing a lightning strike on film is no Small feat. Theress a technique to it and it takes patience Hossack said. Its something Ive done two or three times in my career and you dont know when or where its going to strike. Free press business reporter Larry Kusch won Bronze in the daily press reporting category for his Story about a Federal court judge striking Down a Cabinet order hours before it was to take effect that would have ended the Canadian wheat boards monopoly on Barley marketing. In his Story that ran aug. 1, 2007, Kusch wrote that the judges decision meant the Winnipeg based wheat Board would continue to control the marketing of Prairie Barley. Its a Story that More than just people who Are Farmers and work in the Grain Industry Are interested in Kusch said. The Story had broader political implications. It was an important Story about government process not just about Grain marketing in Canada. Laura Rance a freelance business columnist who has contributed a weekly column to the free press for about 10 years won Silver in the press column category. The column that ran sept. 7, 2007 examined How Farmers often get nervous when the Media reports on How much Money they make. Farmers dont want the Urban population to think they Are Rich Rance said. I was trying to reach both targets with the column the farming and non farming population with a message that Farmers be ashamed of the fact that they re having a Good year and that non Farmers need to understand prices Are High in the Spring does not mean the Farmer will get High prices in the fall. Free press editor Margo Goodhand said the work that won the awards was impressive and she is proud the journalists have received the National recognition they deserve.
