Com election 2008 Winnipeg free press monday october 6, 2008 t Hompson Churchill is a swing Riding to watch a Liberal nip race some experts see As labour enthusiasts pitted against first nations advocates in a Riding that swings Between parties and traditionally has a Low turnout. Csc actress turned Liberal my Tina keeper 46, is battling for her seat with an nip candidate 20 years her Junior Niki Ashton. Last week keeper trotted out former prime minister Paul Martin to stump for her Here both of them fingerprinting at the conservatives Over the stalling of previous Liberal plans to improve housing health and education for first nations people. The question now say some experts remains whether keeper will be Able to mobilize aboriginal voters from across the vast Riding to get out on election Day and win their vote to drive her numbers Over the top on a platform that includes increased child care spaces and infrastructure improvements in the North. This time keeper wont Benefit from a split Between two duelling candidates on the left As in 2006, when then incumbent nip turned Independent Bev Desjarlais and Ashton were on the ballot. Its a Tough race. I have no delusions about that said keeper at a lunch break this week at Thompsons mystery Lake hotel about 740 Kilometres North of Winnipeg. Keeper said she still feels confident Shell win come election Day. Theress five provincial Ridings in the Churchill Riding they re All nip four of them Are Cabinet ministers the Riding people have a very Strong relationship to the provincial nip government so theress a Strong association with the nip party said keeper. Ashton told the free press Sheds not sure Shell win the seat but then again the Riding of about 75,000 people has always been hard to Call. The Riding is both resource Rich and poverty scarred thanks to Remote communities scattered about the Riding and cities like Thompson that is benefiting from the mining Boom. Its also a seat thatus bounced Between the nip from 1979 to 1993, the liberals from 1993 to 1997, and the nip from 1997 until 2005 when Desjarlais left the party Over her opposition to same sex marriage. That move threw the Riding into play for keepers election in 2006, and she said Sheds been working hard at visiting communities outside Thompson. Polling in the Riding is hopeless said political expert. Turnout is always lower in the Churchill Riding. There Are still a number Homes that dont have phones. Phone might be in the band office cuts Down on the reliability of polls said prof. Paul Thomas a University of Manitoba politics professor. Thomas also cited the Ridings poor voting rates such As in 2006 when Only 53 per cent of listed voters made it to the polls. Energetic Ashton is a hard worker who has a splintered car Windshield to show for her months of campaigning across the Riding where her father Steve Ashton the provinces current minister of intergovernmental affairs was first elected to government at a younger age than she is now. Last time round there was a vote split. And this time round we dont have that vote split. Ive been working really hard since i was nominated almost 20 months ago said Ashton. Gabrielle. At least 14 homeowners in the Midtown Toronto Riding of St. Paulus had the Brake lines of their vehicles either Cut or damaged on Friday night some had the letter l keyed into the Side and some Homes were sprayed with anti Liberal Graffiti said Liberal Carolyn Bennett who is seeking reelection in the Riding. On saturday night at least 11 More Homes were targeted in the West end Riding of Parkdale High Park and the liberals said they were shocked and disturbed that it appeared their supporters were being attacked. The most upsetting thing is the intimidation of people who Are participating in a democratic process Bennett said. These people could have been killed with their Brake lines Cut its like some sort of bad movie. Bennett said the vandalism is part of a troubling trend Given that Liberal supporters were also victimized in similar incidents reported in Guelph ont., in late August and in the Toronto Riding of Willowdale in March both in the Lead up to by election votes. Police say they Are investigating and wont confirm any link to the election Campaign. Police patrolled Bennetts Riding on saturday night to prevent More vandalism and said they will continue to do so in areas that have been affected. Homeowner Jennifer Lithgow awoke Early saturday morning to find b. Rae lies sprayed on her House and after buckling her six year old daughter into her car she found the brakes we rent working.
