And now get ready to be very excited the big moment was finally Here. It was sunday and the curtain had just dropped at the Centennial concert Hall bringing to an end my stunning classical music debut with the Winnipeg symphony orchestra a debut that even my 19 year old daughter after intense questioning during the ride Home had to admit was pretty Good of now Stop looking at me if you did not actually see my big classical music debut i am very disappointed in you but for the purposes of this column i will provide a Brief informative Recap As part of the a sons Hometown heroes pops program i teamed up with Ron Arnst the legendary voice of the Winnipeg Gold eyes at can West Park for a baseball style play by play concert cast of Beethoven is fifth symphony. We were Only onstage for about 10 minutes in the second half of the show so Ron and i got to spend a great Many hours literally weeks in symphony time backstage involved in traditional classical music activities such As talking about baseball going to the bathroom and trying to find out where the snack machine was located. But the main thing i did to pass the time As i sat just out of View of the audience was stare with unabashed envy at the musician wailing away onstage about 10 feet in front of me. I am talking Here about a Guy with the coolest Job in the world of classical music. Which brings us to my big moment. As soon As the curtain dropped i strolled Over to this Guy and heart pounding in my Chest asked a question that had been burning feverishly in my mind since opening night. Dude i asked a note of fragile Hope in my voice do you think i could hit your Gong so percussionist Ben Reimer who actually gets paid to hit things pondered the request. Go ahead he finally said Knock yourself out i am fully aware at this Point that Reader reaction to my big moment will be divided along gender lines As follows typical female reaction typical male reaction a Gong Sweet the musical Point Here is that for Guys there Are few things More Manly than producing extremely loud sounds. This goes a Long Way towards explaining electric guitars atomic bombs and that Guy who is always screaming on the oxi clean commercials. We Guys pretty much leave the womb with an overpowering desire to make loud Manly noises. Try to name one Guy who when he was a kid playing with toy cars and trucks in his Back Yard did not make that loud Vrr room Vrr room noise by vibrating his lips thereby coating his toys and his Little buddies with a thick layer of spit. Anyway i realize that in Many ways it is wrong to covet another mans Gong but there you go. I have been fascinated with the notion of walloping a Gong since i was kid sitting in my basement watching Tarzan movies which generally began with a huge sweaty Guy in a Leopard skin Loincloth hammering a Gong the size of several manhole covers. Before i got to hit bends Gong is it just me or does that sound wildly inappropriate i got a few Quick lessons in Gong 101. You hit it just below the Centre Ben told me As several so Guys gathered around to watch you just kind of warm it up a Little bit to get it vibrating and then you wind up and really let Loose. Naturally i asked Ben if he gets seriously excited in those treasured moments when he is Able to get it on and bang the Gong. Of yeah he beamed i get a Rush out of it. Thatus the thing about percussion when you hit anything everyone knows it. And thatus when he handed me the Gong hitting instrument huge Surprise its called a beater and told me to give it my Best shot. Which i did. I dont know the exact words to describe the intensely satisfying sound the Gong made when i walloped it but i will try it was very very loud in fact several of my Teeth vibrated out of my head and skittered around on the stage like Chi lets on a hot plate. Good tone Ben declared proudly a plus. My concert partner Ron Arnst was also impressed. High fives buddy he shouted As we slapped hands in an expression of pure Guy Joy. So my classical music career ended on a High note.
