w Ith tears in his eyes a Winnipeg police officer recalled tuesday How he tried to Comfort a critically wounded fellow cop despite believing the Man a snot going to survive. I was scared. I thought one of my colleagues was dying. Ive never Felt anything like that to this Day an emotional const. Peter Breuer told court. He described feeling that time stood still while waiting for paramedics to arrive and Rush const. Don Murray to Hospital. Murray suffered a Shotgun blast to the Abdomen while const. Curtis Penner was shot in the hand and forearm. Const. Jeremy cull suffered a leg wound after a police Bullet ricocheted and hit him. The officers came under attack while executing a drug search warrant at the Jubilee Avenue Home of Daniell Anderson in december 2006. The 22 year old allegedly barricaded himself in the bathroom and opened fire. Andersons two week trial began monday. He has pleaded not guilty to various charges including attempted murder. Breuer had been one of the first officers to enter the Home after a battering room was used to Knock Down the door. He told Queens Bench Justice Doug Abra officers loudly and clearly announced their presence inside. He was dealing with Andersons Girlfriend in the living room when he heard a pop come from another area of the Home. Initially it did not Register As anything. Then i thought maybe a dog had been shot said Breuer. The sound was quickly followed by another one and then a voice Yelling ism hit or ism Hurt he said. Const. William Russell a member of the police k 9 unit at the time had gone into the Home to secure dogs owned by the Anderson family. He was sitting with the animals and Andersons Mother when he heard gunfire and saw cull react. He was running towards me. I saw him Arch Back. At that time he was shot said Russell. He led cull into a bedroom where they took cover on the floor out of the line of fire. I did not know what had happened what was going on. I a snot sure if the shooter was following the officers or if he was still in the bathroom said Russell. Cull was in great pain saying his leg was tingling. There was blood running from the wound. He said we needed to get out of there. I told him that he was of that he was doing great that wed get out said Russell who admits to a sense of Relief when he found out cull Hadnot been shot in the Back As he first feared. The situation became More grim when they heard additional shots followed by someone Yelling officer Down from another part of the Home he said. The two men briefly considered crawling through a Small bedroom window but ultimately ran from the Home. Cull Laid Down in a Snowbank while Russell applied pressure to his wound using a dog Leash As a Tourniquet. Breuer was involved in the arrest of Anderson. The officer claims Anderson struggled violently and had to be restrained with a series of punches to the head and upper body. He was screaming Yelling flailing. My Only goal at that time was to secure the accused and Stop the threat he said. During Cross examination defence lawyer Roberta Campbell suggested that Breuer was the aggressor. Ism going to suggest you lost it that you lost your temper she said. Breuer disagreed. Campbell also claimed her client was immediately remorseful for the shooting and told Breuer and other officers that he did not realize head been shooting at police. Breuer said he did not recall any such comments. He also admits to not immediately seeing what Campbell described As a big gaping Hole in Andersons Arm the result of being shot himself.
