N urses at Selkirk mental health Centre will get a pay raise to help attract and retain new graduates addressing a critical labour shortage that forces them to work 16 hour Days to care for unstable psychiatric patients. The mental health Centre is Short Between 30 and 40 nurses at any Given time say officials with the Manitoba government and general employees Union Ngeu which represents 139 nurses at the Selkirk facility. Nearly All of the 261 Beds at the mental health Centre Are full and nurses care for Short and Long term patients suffering from dementia mental illness and brain injury. Nurses say they Deal with volatile patients on a daily basis without on site Security and sometimes endure physician mental or sexual abuse. Acute care nurse Mary Fuhr said the locked unit that houses some of the sickest psychiatric patients is Short six full time nurses and that there Arentt enough nurses to staff All of the 30 Beds in the new brain injury Centre set to open soon. Nursing shortages elsewhere were eased by the pay increase 11,000 nurses represented by the Manitoba nurses Union received earlier this year. But nurses at the Selkirk mental health Centre Are part of the civil service and did not receive that increase. They also work 65 hours More a year than the provinces 11,000 other nurses. Peter Olfert Ngeu president said the Union reached a Deal with the province wednesday afternoon that says All 330 of Manitoba ass civil service nurses will receive the same annual salary As menu nurses retroactive to october 2007. Next Spring civil service nurses will also work Shorter hours. Olfert said parity will help Selkirk mental health Centre compete with other hospitals to attract new graduates and retain existing staff. I think Many times those facilities Are overlooked by Young grads coming out of school As a place to work Olfert said. I think this is going to help those institutions recruit since they can now say the Money you make Here is the same As other facilities. Fuhr said Sheds seen colleagues retire or leave from burnout and the centres recruitment and retention efforts dont work Well enough to replace them. New graduates Are lured by higher salaries and signing bonuses at other hospitals in Manitoba or elsewhere in Canada. Its about fatigue and burnout Fuhr said. The same Job that was done before by four nurses is now being done by two. Fuhr said the workload has increased for nurses since patients coming in Are sicker and some therapeutic group programs outings and medication awareness among them have been curtailed because of the shortage. She speculates the critical staffing problem receives less attention because the nurses work with mental health patients not in areas such As cancer treatment which would Likely cause Public outrage. Minister of healthy living Kerri Irvin Ross said they province is working to resolve those issues. The administration at the Hospital is working to fill those positions and ism confident they re going to Irvin Ross said. Tory health critic Myrna Driedger said All nurses in the health care system should be treated the same and not be forced to work in unsafe conditions. If you have a massive nursing shortage the patient in the end is the one who suffers the most from it she said. I dont think what these nurses Are asking for is unfair. Brenda Flett works in a psychiatric geriatric Ward she describes As archaic where some rooms have cubicle dividers to separate Long term care patients while other rooms offer no privacy for people.
