L Ike so Many of you i have been responding to the endless barrage of stories and news items about our Economys tailspin in a mature and measured manner. Ive been closing my eyes plugging my ears and chanting la la la la la until wheel of Fortune comes on. Thatus not True. In fact i have been drawn to stories about foreclosures Bank collapses and skyrocketing prices with a sick fascination. It feels like our Economy is a giant train wreck and its impossible to look away. Is this an overreaction to some blips in the Market As my financial adviser wants me to believe or Are the freewheeling baby Boomers who have never known bad times suddenly in for the Wake up Call of a lifetime i suspect its the latter. The question that interests me is How an entire generation be so woefully unprepared for an economic downturn. Lets face it we thought there would always be More where that came from. Our generation like most before us wanted More than our parents had. The lesson some people missed though was that our parents worked hard saved and did without in order to buy what they needed. Many of us Learned to borrow to buy the shiny objects we thought we deserved. And then we borrowed More to buy larger Homes second or third cars Winter holidays and restaurant meals. That scratching sound at the front door is the Piper and hers looking to be paid. I did not grow up with the sense there were Money Trees in the backyard. I was raised in a modest House in West Kildonan. In the Early years there was one bathroom one car and one income for five people. My Mother sewed Many of my clothes baked cooked from scratch and made sure we lived frugally but without fear. If my Brothers and i wanted to go somewhere we took the bus. We did not expect our parents to double As chauffeurs. We were emphatically not poor simply aware that the pay Cheque be allowed to run out before the pay period ended. My parents have enjoyed a Lovely retirement thanks to never spending More than they earned. Novel concept Isnit it for the most part i paid attention to their example. But now the Good times May be ending for All of my generation. The status symbols have to be parked because driving a Hummer Marks you As a Rube. People having expense account lunches at expensive restaurants should be looking Over their shoulders even As they spoon Hollan Daise sauce Over their asparagus tips. I am not immune to financial foolishness. My House is almost three times the size of the House where my parents still live. My husband and i thought it was necessary to hold our Large blended family. It a snot not really but we bought what we could afford without signing up for a lifetime of debt. We sock away Money in retirement accounts like people who survived the great depression. We Cross our fingers. I have always lived in fear ill end up a Little old lady living in a cardboard Box and eating cat food. Ive spent my life saving and cutting Corners to make sure that does not happen. Ism cutting even More these Days. At the end of the Day its the kids i worry about mine and yours. Our children already have a far better Quality of life than we do a fact that would be More irksome Only if they did not use their own earnings to pay for cellphone Bills meals out movies and Lovely wardrobes. Their dad and i have known for some time that the party might be ending and were prepared for it. But the baby Boomers begat a next generation whose insatiable desire for the fresh and flashy is going to doom them to a life of debt if we dont smarten them up.
