Com Berissimo modular Granite counter top a University of Manitoba scientist has figured out How to Cut the amount of greenhouse Gas belching from cows by up to 200 litres a Day feed them Grain instead of grass. For the past four years prof. Ermias Gebreab has been analysing cow burps at the National Centre for livestock and the environment South of Winnipeg to measure the amount of methane Dairy cows produce when they Are fed different types of food. About 98 per cent of the methane from a cow is emitted through its Mouth Only two per cent comes out the other Way said Gebreab. Traditional Wisdom holds that grass is less of a contributor to global warming than More Energy intensive crops like Grain. Keb Reabus report published in the journal of animal science shows that May not be the Case. On wednesday in a Dairy barn at the Glen Lea research station Gebreab recruited a gentle old Jersey steer named George to demonstrated How his study worked. The eating end of the Bovine Guinea pig was guided into a plexiglas feeding compartment with a hooded Collar around its neck to trap the gases. A Hose sucked the stinking Gas out of the feeding area and into a machine that measured the methane. For the actual study Holstein Dairy cows were fed grasses alternating every other week with grains. The amount of methane they produced was measured. The grass fed cows produced 600 to 700 litres of methane per Day compared to about 500 litres per Day for Grain fed cows said Gebreab. That information could help Canada reduce its greenhouse Gas and More accurately predict its methane emissions from cattle. Its estimated 8.3 per cent of Canadas emissions Are caused by farming and 32 per cent of that total from methane producing cows. Gebreab says the grasses cows eat Are harder to digest than grains so they produce More Gas. For now Keb Reabus findings Are being used in the United states not Canada he said. Weave developed the Model Here and the americans use it said Gebreab. The United states environmental Protection Agency has adopted the research to assess its cattle methane emissions. Keb Reabus research is partly funded by the Dairy Farmers of Canada. In Canada National estimates of methane emissions rely on mathematical models such As the one recommended by the intergovernmental panel for climate change Pic said Gebreab. They dont take into account the kind of feed said Gebreab. Their predictions Are not very accurate. His stud yes simulations found that using Picc values can result in a methane emissions overestimate of about 12.5 per cent for Dairy cattle and a 9.8 underestimate for feedlot cattle. Gebreab said his study did not look at which resulted in More greenhouse gases Overall cattle fed perennial grasses like Hay or Alfalfa or animals who eat Grain and All the Energy consumed and pollution produced to Harvest that Grain. His study tried to gain a More accurate assessment of just How Gassy cattle Are depending on what they eat. Carol. Sanders free press. .
