I tvs saturday morning the Day after halloween and we Are sitting at Home in front of our computer screen trying to motivate ourselves to write yet another near professional Quality newspaper column for your sunday morning enjoyment. But we Are finding this task More challenging than usual despite the fact that for the first time in recorded history our beautifully carved Jack of lantern we made a cat this year was not reduced to a massive puddle of Orange goo by fun Loving neighbourhood teenagers. We Are finding ourselves somewhat distracted by the voices calling to us from our Kitchen where a tub of leftover miniature chocolate bars Are crying out begging would be a More accurate word to be eaten. This happens every year largely because we buy enough tiny Candy bars to feed the Indian subcontinent whereas the number of trick or Treater we get is marginally less than the average number of paying customers at a Jerry Lewis film festival if you catch our Drift. But the real problem As if you have not already begun to suspect is that we Are having a great Deal difficulty settling on what we professional newspaper persons like to Call a topic. And when i say we i am referring to the Crackerjack column writing team that traditionally assembles at my computer desk every saturday morning. This precision team consists of myself and my two dogs my primary dog Cooper a Basset hound with the brain Power of a sea sponge and my secondary dog Zoe a miniature Wiener dog with the kind of piercing Yap that can bore through three inches of solid steel. Heres How this team Rolls every saturday i Park myself in front of the computer with a cup of Coffee and several slices of Peanut butter Toast and begin the important process of staring blankly at the computer screen my secondary dog Zoe positions herself underneath my chair because Long experience has taught her that if one of the wheels Rolls Over her Tail causing her to Emit a pitiful yelp i will feel guilty and give her a milk one and my primary dog Cooper sits stoically off to one Side staring hungrily at my Peanut butter Toast with what can Only be called laser beam like intensity a Small Chain of drool dangling from his muzzle praying that my attention will lapse for a fraction of a second so he can make his move. I hasten to mention this is the same writing process employed by Ernest Hemingway during much of his later work which May explain Why he shot himself. Ism just saying. Anyway the team remains in position like this for several hours until i lapse into a coma which allows one of my team members to snorkel Down the Toast. At this Point we open email from readers on the off Chance that one of them has sent us something resembling a column that we can slap our names on and Call it a Day. Today we Are in Luck because a faithful Reader named Rich Ferguson has sent us a link to a thought provoking video called what happens when engineers own dogs. This video which you can see for yourself on youtube features a Wiener dog named Jerry playing fetch. But Jerry is not playing fetch with his master. No that would be too time consuming and physically draining for a professional Engineer. Jerry is having the time of his life endlessly scurrying after a Tennis Ball being Flung by a robotic Arm invented by his master. Yes the Arm which features an inboard computer and proximity sensors hoists itself up then launches the Ball Down a hallway. Time after time Jerry excitedly retrieves the Ball and then on his own drops it Back into the arms reloading mechanism. This video teaches us several important lessons namely 1 your Standard dog will play fetch for a period far longer than most Canadian governments Are in Power and 2 some professional engineers have More time on their hands and Are even Lazier than newspaper columnists. But that is not the Point. The Point is that thanks to the tireless efforts of newspaper readers such As Rich Ferguson my crack writing team now has a topic worthy of its rapt attention. Unfortunately the team is not interested in a rousing game of fetch let alone helping me write an educational and entertaining column. They Are now Only interested in lying on the Couch near the window in the living room where they Are currently engaged in More traditional writing activities such As scratching themselves snoring and emitting potentially toxic Vapours. But thatus Fine by me. I have important research to do. I have to watch that fetch video a dozen More times and make another Batch of Peanut butter Toast before my writing assistants Wake up. I realize there Are other ways to produce insightful informative columns but Why bother tinkering with such a finely tuned system after All if it worked for Hemingway i think its Good enough for me.
