Com a 3 h Umble and quiet Oscar Lathlin was a politician who shunned Media attention and worked hard behind the scenes to boost self determination for the North and for aboriginal people. The Veteran Manitoba Cabinet minister died suddenly sunday morning at the Pas health Complex. He was 61. A Cree with the Opas kayak Cree nation Lathlin had suffered asthma since he was a teenager respiratory ailments made it a struggle for him to breathe and walk in the past 18 months. Despite poor health he rarely complained. A tireless constituency worker Lathlin made the 1,000 Kilometre round trip from the Pas to Winnipeg twice last week a trip he usually made every weekend. Lathlin was at his nearby Cabin at Clearwater Lake when he suddenly took ill. An ambulance took him to the Pas where he died around 1 a. M. Sunday. His death came As a Shock. Lathlin was not the first aboriginal Cabinet minister in Manitoba but he was among the first to hold successive Cabinet posts. There was a quiet manner about him a quiet and a gentle manner.
