Two weeks ago Manitoba ass auditor general released a report that said welfare recipients owe taxpayers $ 21 million in overpayment accumulating since the 1970s. The province has said it intends to implement the reports recommendations but it a snot said anything about clawing Back funds. Under social assistance rules recipients Are allowed to earn up to $ 100 a month without deductions. Manitoba ass auditor general Carol Bellringer said the provinces employment and income assistance program Eia has to do More to Weed out recipients who Are being paid too much in benefits. Social agencies believe its absurd to claw Back welfare payments so they asked Monkman to be the poster person for them tuesday and give the Public a look at the average welfare recipient. Monkman gets $ 1,400 a month in welfare $ 550 in Cash to feed and clothe five kids ranging in age from seven to 13, and the rest is for rent. Monkman said she was shocked there was no Cheque and Only a letter last week from the province saying social assistance will be deducting Money from her december Cheque. That Means the Mother of five has virtually no assistance until after Christmas. Her first pay Cheque Isnit due until the end of december. The single Mother earns $ 10 an hour at a social Agency. Its really hard to get ahead when you feel like you re being pushed backwards Monkman said. The majority of the 56,000 Manitoban on welfare Are single mothers.
