T hey come from different walks of life one a school teacher and the other a guitarist and music store manager but they both Are working to make a difference in the lives of inner City children. Vernelle Buller a Mother of three adult children and Tyson Lavallee a 21 year old who plays in a Rock band Are volunteers with Urban youth adventures a program run in partnership by Camp Arnes which provides free recreational programming to children living in Winnipeg Gas Core area. Once a week Lavallee volunteers at a weekly Jam night playing guitar for sing along sessions and teaching the children How to play guitar while providing mentorship and serving As a role Model. I dont know where i would be right now if it a snot for music so it just gives the kids another Way to release and it gives them something to do with their time rather than being out doing things they be said Lavallee explaining How he became an Urban youth adventure Volunteer. Its definitely a positive just to have music in your life. It helped for me for sure. He adds that after just six months of volunteering he has already noticed a difference in the children who participate in the music program. You can see that you re making a difference in these kids lives every time you get together with them he said. You can just see the differences they enjoy coming they enjoy playing music they want to show me everything they ave Learned Over the past week. There Are a lot of kids Here who Are super talented that with a Little bit of direction with some encouragement they can go anywhere. Buller also volunteers on Jam night assisting with the musical part of the program and also serving healthy snacks to the children All of whom come from Low income families. In addition she volunteers with other Urban youth adventure activities and was also involved in the special summer music program. She said she initially became involved with Urban youth adventures because her husband serves As the executive director of the organization but Over the past six months she said the Volunteer Opportunity has become much More. She adds that she has loved getting to know children while giving them the Opportunity to learn new skills and participate in fun activities which in addition to music nights can include sports such As boxing and biking or any other activity where a Volunteer is willing to lend their expertise. I think its a great Opportunity to develop relationships with these kids. I really also believe in music to really motivate them to do something Good with their lives said Buller who works As a substitute music teacher. I think All of us want to do something to make a difference in the inner City and this is one Way that we can. These kids have so much potential to see the potential that they have its really exciting to think that they re the ones that can make the changes in their lives and in the lives that surround them.
