Com a 3 Winnipeg human rights lawyer David Matas was among 42 new people named to the order of Canada on tuesday. Matas was made a member of the order for his contributions to human rights legislation and immigrant and refugee Law. The author of numerous books and articles Matas has been involved in Many High profile human rights cases in Winnipeg and around the world. In 2006, Matas represented the Raza family who took Refuge inside the Crescent fort Rouge United Church while fighting deportation to Pakistan. He has also worked to draw attention to the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China. Currently he is dealing with iranian refugees in Iraq who face deportation if the americans hand them Over to the iraqi government. Matas said his work is a gruesome daily experience and this honour encourages him to carry on. Its a societal or governmental recognition of the importance of this work he said. It gives me increased Vigour increased determination to keep on doing what ism doing. Matas became interested in human rights after studying the legacy of the holocaust. He said it taught him the importance of bringing War criminals to Justice fighting hate speech and getting people involved in defending human rights. Smith developed a new method of magnetic resonance spectroscopy used in the Early detection of breast cancer. He served As director of the National research Council Institute for biological sciences in Ottawa from 1987 to 1992 before returning to Winnipeg to build the arc Institute for Bio diagnostics. Other notable inductees to the order include Willie Ozree the first Black player to compete in the nil.
