The Economy dominated the news in the latter months of last year and will surely continue to do so for much of 2009 As governments at All Levels move to address the problems and hopefully help us All begin to claw our Way out of this mess. But there Are a few other issues which were prominent in 2008 and Are Likely to spend at least some time in the news in 2009. Penny for your thoughts when nip my Pat Martin introduced his private members Bill to axe the beloved Penny he set off a firestorm of debate among canadians. The enthusiasm on both sides of the argument ultimately led to the finance committee putting a study of the usefulness of the Penny on their list of things to do. That study never happened because parliament got shut Down twice in the last four months once for the election and once by the prime minister to prevent a non Confidence vote. The committee will have to agree again to do the study since the committees work All got suspended with the election but Martin is determined the Issue will not die. Ism going to speak to the minister responsible for the mint and ask him to do a review of our currency in general said Martin. I am of the View that we should eliminate both the Penny and the Nickel. Its a Money Saver. If the government is serious about tightening their Belt Here is an easy one to do. Canadian wheat Board the Harper government seems to be finding that introducing marketing Choice to Prairie Grain producers is one of the most difficult of their 2006 election promises to implement. Their attempt to do it by order of Cabinet was stopped by the courts which ordered the government to get the approval of parliament As a whole. The legislation introduced to get that approval died on the order paper last Spring after agriculture minister Gerry Ritz never pushed to have his legislation brought up for debate. The government Likely hoped the pro marketing Choice lobby would win control of the Board in recent elections and introduce marketing Choice that Way. But that too did not materialize when the pro monopoly Side won enough seats to keep its majority vote on the Board. So what now Ritz could re introduce his legislation but Many feel that after so Many attempts went sour and with parliament needing to co operate and survive to address the economic situation the wheat Board legislation wont soon get anywhere near the House of commons. The opposition parties Are All against the idea of ending the wheat boards monopoly and its hard to imagine anyone wanting parliament to fall Over this Issue. Others believe the government will now just let the world Trade organization handle the Issue and have the monopoly ruled unacceptable by International Trade Law. That Way the Harper government does not need to expend its own political capital on the Issue and it still gets what it wants. Karlheinz Schreiber / Brian Mulroney yeah. This again. Schreiber is the disgraced German businessmen at the heart of the allegations about whether or not former prime minister Brian Mulroney was Given kickbacks to award a lucrative plane contract to Airbus. The ethics committee study of this Issue was making big headlines at this time last year and prime minister Stephen Harper finally agreed to a Public inquiry. The hearings headed by former Manitoba judge Jeffrey Oliphant will begin in february. The report is due in june. The inquiry could become one of the biggest political events of 2009 and determine once and for All whether a former prime minister of Canada did accept bribes. Mia. Rabson free press. My.
