Com monday january 5, 2009 b 4 a antiquarian bookseller Burton Lysecki has seen a lot of changes in the Osborne South business District in his 37 years As an area entrepreneur. When i first started business i believe there were three drugstores on the Street within a three or four Block area. I think there were three Shoemakers. There was a hardware store. There were two or three grocery stores and two Banks. It was almost like a Small town in this area he said last week. But City and neighbourhood shopping patterns have changed and the Osborne South business District a Long narrow strip extending from confusion Corner to Jubilee Avenue has had to adjust. The Shoemakers drugstores and hardware store have disappeared replaced largely by restaurants bookstores professional offices and specially retailers. The area still has a Small town feel to it but its businesses Are reaching out to a wider geographic area and catering More to Winnie Eggers Leisure time. Symbolizing this change is the South Osborne strips newest addition the soon to be opened Ken Segal gallery. After More than two decades in Osborne Village Segal is moving his contemporary Art and custom framing business next door to lyse kids shop. In fact the bookseller is his new landlord. My lease was up on River Avenue. I was looking for a place that was a Little More affordable that had parking Segal said last week As he worked feverishly to renovate his space in time for a planned mid january opening. Osborne Village May be the most densely populated area in the City but it did not necessarily translate into huge volumes of customers for Segal whose Enterprise has evolved considerably since he and his family established it As posters plus 22 years ago. Since transforming his business into a private Art gallery five years ago he has carried More than 40 shows by local artists. His modest new location has higher ceilings to better showcase artists works and it has plenty of parking both on the property and on adjacent residential streets something that is at a Premium in the Village. Segal also likes the business mix in his new neighbourhood which include the Bistro 7 the chocolate zen bakery truffles chocolate artisans term ans books and collectibles lyse kids the sounding Stone gift shop chichi Chicks up cycled Vintage furniture Retro Home decor and the Park theatre and movie cafe. Danielle Barkman a co owner of the chocolate zen bakery which opened a Little Over a year ago at 553 Osborne st., said she and her partners picked the area because they wanted to be on a Busy Street with Good parking and relatively Low rents. What we did not realize was what a tight Little Community it is and How supportive everyone is in this area of Small business she said. The chocolate zen specializes in european style baking tortes cheesecakes pastries. About 70 per cent of its business involves supplying restaurants country clubs banquet facilities Coffee shops and weddings with the remaining 30 per cent from walk in customers. The owners Are hoping to boost local sales to 40 per cent of their business. I find that the neighbourhood itself its almost like a Little town living in a big City Barkman said. Its very much neighbourhood oriented everyone kind of looks out for each other and supports everyone. Barbara Gerrie president of the Osborne South Biz said she sees the District evolving into More of a destination area with unique shops and More restaurants. The business strip follows the old River Park Streetcar line along Osborne Street and Many of its renovated buildings Date Back to the Early 20th Century. I see More renovations of the old buildings and the preserving of the character of the old buildings said Gerrie who owns Baltimore insurance brokers inc., which has operated in the neighbourhood since 1967. Unfortunately one of the More prominent buildings in the area the Morley apartments which used to have businesses on the main floor has been vacant since a fire damaged it about three years ago. There Are a couple of Blanks empty buildings in the area which is unfortunate because that sort of subtracts from the vitality said Lysecki. On the whole i would say this is a Good area. I think the restaurants help. We have a Good gift shop in the area the sounding Stone. My shop is a Good shop. There Are things happening he said. Lysecki said hers also thrilled about his new Neighbour and tenant the Ken Segal gallery. It adds More culture to the area. Now in this area we have two bookstores and Well have an Art gallery. Thatus pretty neat. Larry. Kusch free press. My. Ca the Osborne South Biz where is it extends South on Osborne Street from confusion Corner to Jubilee Avenue at the st. Vital Bridge. How is the business District evolving used to feature More traditional neighbourhood services such As drugstores Shoemakers and a hardware store. Now its becoming More of a destination spot with two bookstores a soon Tobe opened private Art gallery More restaurants and Funky shops. I thought it was called South Osborne South Osborne definitely Rolls off the Tongue More easily to Winni Eggers but when the Biz wanted to Register the name it found much to its Chagrin that South Osborne was already taken. Hence Osborne South.
