Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - January 8, 2009, Winnipeg, Manitoba C m y k Page c1 n of unlike their Miracle on new years eve the Manitoba Moose found another such wonder wednesday night at the its Centre to defeat the Hartford Wolf pack. And if its miracles that it takes to get out of a slump then the Moose dont seem to mind praying for them. Guys were Yelling at me on the Bench As i went by that i had 10 seconds Moose defence Man Nolan Baumgartner said describing the Start of his journey to at least temporary sainthood Well of just the overtime Winner wednesday night. They had three Guys standing on the Blue line but i just decided to try to beat one and see if i could throw one on the net. I honestly tried to shoot but i dont think it had anything on it. It went along the ice but somehow got its Way in there. Hartford defence Man Jim Fahey partially blocked Baumgart nerds attempt off the right Wing but the puck Slid directly through the pads of goalie Miika Viikman with 1.7 seconds left and the Moose had a 3 2 Victory Only their second in the last nine games. The other a last second comeback and then a seeing Eye shot in overtime dec. 31 for a 2 1 win Here against Chicago. I think the biggest thing is that we found a Way to win instead of finding a Way to lose said Moose coach Scott Arniel whose team was trounced 6 3 by Hartford on tuesday. It puts us on the Road for eight of the next 10 on a positive note instead of feeling sorry for ourselves or feeling Down. The Moose did some soul searching with a Post game meeting tuesday that lasted More than 30 minutes. We talked last night in that close door meeting and everybody had something to say about playing As a team and working hard and doing what you do Best Arniel said. Tonight a snot the most exciting game but we did not care. Baumgartner even thought that most of the 5,984 patient fans at its Centre might have been bored. I think the Way we played tonight is a step Forward he said. We did not do anything special grinder it out and i know it was pretty Boring to watch and the fans probably did not have a great time but in the end its two Points. The Moose rallied twice on wednesday night first on a goal by Jason Krog and then on a speedy dash an Flash Marker by Jannik Hansen. Then Cory Schneider helped nurse the team to overtime making 33 saves and collected his 11th straight win in a Moose uniform. Schneider had won 10 in a Row before being recalled to Vancouver in november and he returned with Hansen on monday. Manitoba ass offence of late has struggled scoring just 17 times in nine games. The team seems hopeful however. Our lineups been hit losing Guys like Michael Grabner and Alex Bolduc. And Speed to me is a killer Arniel said. Ism glad Well have an Opportunity with Grabner Friday night. Hell be ready to go. Tim. Campbell free press. My. Ca for breaking news go to Winnipeg repress. Com sports ticker s ure Vic Peters knows hers past his prime. But that does not necessarily mean the former Canadian Champion and his team cant still get to prime time on the Manitoba Curling scene in 09, even if the big three has in most minds narrowed to the big two of Jeff Stoughton and Kerry Burtnyk. Winning the Safeway championship menus provincial title next month in Selkirk if he can win a zone berth this week to get there would definitely be a Long shot for Peters and his team of third Ken Trestor second Chris Neufeld and Lead Keith Fenton. I would think that would be a Surprise this year for sure because we just a vent played Well Peters said before playing st. Vitals Dale Lott wednesday night in the City zones at the West Kildonan Curling club. There comes a time when these Young Guys kind of take Over and thatus whats happening. For us i dont think the motivation Factor has been Good. Last year we had a Good solid year but this year has been dismal. Stoughton and Burtnyk have already earned their berths to next months Safeway championship. So has Young gun Mike Mcewen who won the Manitoba Curling tour championship. That Means Peters is just one of Many Winnipeg teams to have to take the Long and winding Road through the City zones or if that does not work the last gasp Mca Bonspiel to get to Selkirk. Hers seeded no. 4, behind no. 1 Mcewen who Isnit competing in the zones and Back of no. 2 Peter Nicholls and no. 3 Reid Carruthers. Last years provincial finalist David Bohn is at no. 5 and 2005 Manitoba Champ Randy Duciaume is no. 6, followed by a Host of other Good rinks a Hove never won a provincial title. Obviously theress lots of skill involved and i dont think weave worked hard enough said Peters. You have to prepare. And the younger teams and anybody you see on the circuit works really hard at it because its so hard to make any Money on that tour. If you dont keep up with the work ethic. It makes no difference what you did years ago right its what you do this weekend or next weekend added Peters who spends a lot of time nowadays watching his daughter Elizabeth or son Daley do their own elite Curling. There comes a time when you have to realize that probably your Days As a competitive player Are numbered and ism probably getting to that Point even though i feel like ism throwing it half Good. Still Peters admitted hers been outplayed regularly something he did not encounter when he was tearing up the ice when he was 30, 40 or 45. He won a provincial senior title last year with Doug Harrison but in the menus this year its All come crashing Down. You have to be realistic. You think you can but you just cant anymore. You think you can do stuff that you did 20 years ago but it does not quite just fall into place work or play. Still Peters said head be disappointed if he did not get to Selkirk and make some noise there. When you re seeded fourth in City zone obviously your expectations and capabilities should be there. But weave Felt we should have done a lot better All year so maybe. Thatus the Beauty about Curling. You can turn your season around if you get fortunate enough after Christmas. In the run to the purple hearts. A lot of Guys have turned their years around by just having a Good after Christmas and that can happen for sure. Chris. Cariou free press. My.
