S. President elect Barack Obama told them thursday that the new administration will be in their Corner in their push for aboriginal rights. In a 20 minute meeting in Washington the advisers suggested to the Assembly of chiefs from Manitoba Saskatchewan Alberta and the United states that the new administration could support their push for More control Over Oil and Mineral resources. More importantly they said Obama May also reverse president George Bushes decision to refuse to sign on to the United nations declaration of indigenous rights which supports first nations claims to traditional lands. Canada also refused to sign the declaration. One of the chiefs Manitoba treaty one chief Glenn Hudson from pegu is first nation said the meeting capped a trip to Washington to raise support for aboriginal rights. The group included 20 aboriginal chiefs including four treaty one chiefs from Manitoba and several american chiefs Hudson said by phone after the meeting with of amass advisors. Dozens of groups see in Obama a Symbol of Hope including native americans an attitude shared by aboriginal leaders in Canada. Obama campaigned actively on Indian reservations which narrowed the race in traditionally Republican states such As Montana. He was the first presidential candidate to be adopted As a member of the Crow nation under the name Barack Black Eagle. Since his election Obama has appointed an unprecedented seven native americans to his transition team raising expectations of a new relationship Between government and native people. The aboriginal chiefs met for 20 minutes with two of of amass aboriginal advisers after they were permitted to stage a March up Pennsylvania Avenue to Capitol Hill. We asked the u. S. Government to respect our treaty rights in Canada and our indigenous rights Hudson said. It was cordial. They were very accommodating. Hudson Hopes a sympathetic administration under Obama will put political pressure on Ottawa to reconsider its refusal to share Oil and Gas Revenue with aboriginal groups that claim territory along two pipeline routes. The chiefs flew to Washington seeking support from the Obama administration for aboriginal and treaty rights specifically a multimillion Dollar share of revenues from two new Oil and Gas pipelines that will carry 1.9 million barrels of Oil a Day from Alberta across the Prairies to the american Midwest when they open in 2012. Alexandra. Paul free press. My. Ca by Alexandra Paul chiefs Hope Obama will listen first nations leaders meet with his advisers m mayor Sam katzes decision to cancel 852 Snow related parking tickets has infuriated coun. Bill Clement whose committee oversees the Cit yes Snow Clearing efforts. Not Only does Clement think katzes decision earlier this week to give a break to those ticketed As residential Sno Clearing began was wrong he thinks those ticketed should have had their cars towed away As Well. I dont have any problem with people being ticketed said Clement chair of the Public works committee. Said in fact frankly when theress a ban they probably should be towed. It would Only have to happen once. And then All of a sudden the next time there was a ban everybody would get off the Street. The problem is theress never any consequences. The split Between the mayor and a member of his Cabinet comes amid growing criticism of the Cit yes Sno Clearing As Well As possible shifts in the Way Winnipeg plows its streets. This week Katz took the extraordinary step of ordering the cancellation of tickets handed out last sunday the first night of a City wide residential Street overnight parking ban. He determined the City had not Given the Public sufficient warning of its plan to embark on a huge Snow Clearing Effort the first on Winnipeg Gas residential streets this Winter. And yet Clement one of the Cit yes most senior councillors said the move to rescind the tickets ran contrary to the fundamental goal of the parking ban to Clear streets of vehicles in Advance of the arrival of City Snow lows. The Public works department had done a great Job of Snow Clearing added Clement who was first elected to Council in 1983. The departments efforts to Alert the Public were actually reaching unprecedented numbers of Winni Eggers he said. I asked the mayor Point Blank Why did you do that a Clement said. Its the first time anybody yes been really listening to us. It was the first time i Ever had people calling me and saying is it Okay for me to Park now because they ave cleaned my Street a in years past the Public had just Given lip services to parking bans Clement added leading to frustrated Snow removal Crews and inefficient blowing. Public works officials Are considering changing the Cit yes Snow Clearing policy the director of Public works said earlier this week. The City would Alert residents of neighbourhoods to be targeted for blowing on a Given night Bill Larkin suggested. The possible move comes in the Wake of katzes admission that the latest Sno Clearing operation and the parking ban that accompanied it did not completely go according to plan. His move to cancel the first nights collection of parking tickets quelled some but not All Public resentment. Elmwood resident Anthony Klassen wrote to the free press to say space for alternate parking during weeks of overnight parking bans was at a Premium in his neighbourhood. Klassen who lives in a House with three cars received four parking ban tickets two each on monday and tuesday nights. He criticized the City for instituting a citywide ban forcing people to scramble for parking spots even when their neighbourhoods were not being cleared of Snow. If you Ever drive Down Side streets in Elmwood Harbison Martin Jamison Etc in the late evening or Early morning you will see literally hundreds of cars parked along these streets that Are in the same situation As us having no other option but to Park on the Street Klassen said.
