M ONTREAL - In this chain of depraved events orchestrated by a disturbed mind, it turns out the severed human foot delivered to Tory headquarters was only the latest link. Before that, someone repeatedly stabbed a young man with an ice pick. While both killer and victim lay naked, he dismembered the corpse and committed sexual and cannibalistic acts on it. That same person apparently videotaped the gory scene and posted it on the Internet. The video is now being reviewed by Montreal police, who are investigating a case that has shocked the country. A man who goes by the name of Luka Rocco Magnotta - and who according to Montreal police once dated Karla Homolka - is wanted in connection with a three- step crime: a killing, a dismemberment and the mailing of body parts to Ottawa. He is believed to be from Toronto and to have repeatedly used aliases and changed his name over the years. His new name, Luka Rocco Magnotta, has a prolific presence in the darkest corners of the Internet. For nearly two years, it has been notorious among animal- rights activists who posted a $ 5,000 reward looking for a man who tortured and killed cats and posted videos of it online. He is also a low- budget porn actor. His online presence is much vaster, however, than bisexual porn videos. Magnotta is listed as a model. Magnotta - who has vehemently repudiated earlier reports he dated Homolka - is an avid author of online articles. One article written in 2009, titled How to Completely Disappear and Never Be Found, shares a six- step process for escaping and shedding one's identity. Another offers tips on how to get into the porn business. A Facebook page belonging to a selfdescribed model with the same name list a variety of personal heroes. They include pop star Madonna and two Russian leaders: Vladimir Putin and Joseph Stalin. " There is such things as Monsters, Demons and Ghosts," says a quote typed onto that page. " They live inside of us, and sometimes they win." Magnotta, 29, has also gone by the names Eric Clinton Newman and Vladimir Romanov, among others. The geographic epicentre of the investigation is a grimy apartment building in Montreal's west end. Magnotta was renting Apartment 208 in the brick mid- rise, by the bustling Decarie Expressway. Behind that building, a man's torso was found Tuesday in a locked suitcase, buried in a pile of garbage. On the same day, a foot was found in a package opened at Conservative headquarters and a hand was found at an Ottawa postal warehouse - the latter package addressed to the Liberal party. The building manager told The Canadian Press Magnotta had been living there about four months. In manager Eric Schorer's words, " He seemed like a nice guy." Police in masks were combing through the blood- soaked apartment Wednesday, having zeroed in on that particular unit from which a rotten stench was drifting out, says a building resident. The neighbour said police were showing neighbours pictures of two men - the suspected victim and the homicide suspect. The packages in Ottawa came from a common source. They carried parts from the same male victim, and they were both mailed from Montreal. Police shared a few new details about the case Wednesday. " The suspect and victim knew each other," Montreal police Cmdr. Ian Lafreniere told reporters. " It isn't linked to organized crime." Police were milling about the secondfloor apartment Wednesday, where there were still traces of blood and, reportedly, still some body parts stored. Schorer said Magnotta had lived there for four months but hadn't been seen around in a while. He said there were never any complaints about noise in the unit, and that Magnotta passed a credit test to rent there. Police said Magnotta has no criminal record. Finding him might not be easy. " When making the decision to disappear, it is very important to understand that this is not a process that can be successfully accomplished overnight," said the online disappearance tips penned under Magnotta's name. " For best results under normal circumstances, a minimum of four months is really necessary to successfully carry out the heroic actions necessary to leave your old life behind. " This is certainly not an undertaking to be entered into lightly." - CP, with files from Postmedia News OTTAWA - Politicians on Parliament Hill reacted with dismay Wednesday to the bizarre news that a severed foot had been delivered to nearby Conservative offices and that a package containing a hand was stopped in the mail system before it reached its destination - the Liberal party of Canada. As MPs from all parties circulated throughout the parliamentary halls, they all were confronting the same questions. How? Why? NDP House Leader Nathan Cullen said the packages are " unnerving" and were sent by someone hoping to impart " a very disturbing and disgusting message." " You don't imagine there's somebody out there that would do something like this until you see it happen and then you're, you know, constantly surprised by certain people's depravity." Police have identified Luka Rocco Magnotta as a suspect in the case. He is said to be a stripper and a porn actor. Cullen said MPs occasionally get " interesting gifts" in the mail such as unusual handicrafts. " But what's happening now, this is something that none of us ever expected to see and it puts all of our conversations as political figures into a different light." Liberal MP Denis Coderre said he once received " excrement" in the mail. " You always have some whackos," he said, adding that while he is " prudent" as an MP in opening his mail, he never wants to " overdo" that prudence. He said he doesn't know what to make of this case. " It's totally disgusting. It's like in a bad movie and I don't want to associate it to political parties right now, so we'll see what happens. We'll let the police do their job." When the package was delivered to the Conservative office Tuesday, it was taken to Jenni Byrne, a senior Tory official who was Prime Minister Stephen Harper's campaign manager in last year's election. " The package was brought to Ms. Byrne because it looked suspicious," said Conservative party spokesman Fred De- Lorey. When she saw the blood and smelled a foul odour, she decided to call police. DeLorey said the staff are " very upset and disturbed." Interim Liberal leader Bob Rae said there are tragic implications to the crime that no one must forget. Asked if he was concerned about security, Rae said: " The reality is strange things happen." Public Safety Minister Vic Toews was cautious in his assessment of what happened. " I'm not prepared to discuss any security concerns. There are obviously always security plans in place and initiatives in place, but all I can reiterate is that this is an ongoing criminal investigation," he said. - Postmedia News ' There is such things as Demons' Ex- boyfriend of Homolka suspected in snuff video By Peter Rakobowchuk and Sidhartha Banerjee Mailing of hand, foot shakes MPs HANDOUT PHOTO Online postings allegedly made by gay porn actor who calls himself Luka Rocco Magnotta paint a disturbing picture.
