P ORTAGE and Main is going
to have a 150th birthday
party after all.
And everyone is invited, says
Julie Dagostine, of Creswin
Properties Inc.
Dagostine said Creswin decided
to hire a band and serve
cake over the lunch hour today
in the courtyard of 201 Portage
Ave. She said the decision was
made after learning on Thursday
the corner’s big birthday is
Saturday.
No one, not even the city, was
planning to celebrate the occasion.
The courtyard in front of
201 Portage is located on the
same northwest corner where
pioneer businessman Henry
McKenney opened a general
store that became the seed from
which the intersection bloomed.
McKenney’s far- sighted deal to
purchase the property was completed
on June 2, 1862.
“ He wanted to build his new
store where the north- south and
east- west travelways crossed,”
said George F. Reynolds in an
article titled The Man Who Created
the Corner Of Portage and
Main on the Manitoba Historical
Society’s website.
“ In the eyes of the old settlers,
the worst feature was the
distance from the Red River.
Nobody in their right mind, they
said, would even think of building
over one- quarter of a mile
from the river, at that time the
only source of water.”
Creswin has its office at 201
Portage and manages the property.

North End home gutted
A firefighter climbs up to the second level of a home at 274 Powers St. Thursday afternoon.
The vacant house in the North End was destroyed by fire. Flames shot through the
roof as thick black smoke drifted over the area. A Winnipeg Fire Department spokesman
said flames were shooting through the upper windows and roof when firefighters arrived,
adding the decision was made to use a defensive strategy to prevent the fire from
spreading to nearby homes. There were no injuries. The damage to the building and
contents is estimated at $ 170,000. The cause remains under investigation.
THOMPSON RCMP have
identified a 42- year- old man
whose death early Wednesday
launched a homicide investigation.
Allan David Pronteau of
Thompson was found injured in
a home in the Eastwood neighbourhood
of the northern Manitoba
city at about 12: 30 a. m.
Wednesday. He was taken to
hospital, where he died.
RCMP have charged
Pronteau’s 18- year- old daughter,
Jacqueline Brightnose, with
manslaughter and she appeared
in provincial court in Thompson
on Thursday morning.
