COM VIDEO: Bomber stadium officials update latest delays in project POLL: Will you be watching the transit of Venus this evening? I F you cast your glance to the sky tonight, prepare yourself for an astronomical event that will not happen again in your - or your kids' - lifetime. Beginning at 5 p. m., the transit of Venus will be making its flight in front of the sun for the last visible time until 2117. For those not up on their astronomy terms, a transit occurs when one astronomical body passes across the face of another and blocks a portion of it. Tonight, the planet Venus will pass between the sun and Earth. These events are extremely rare and not usually visible from Earth. " It will literally just look like a black dot going across the sun," explained Jayanne English, an associate professor in the department of physics and astronomy at the University of Manitoba. " This is the eighth one... historically, the predictions were made by ( Johanasson) Kepler but since that time, which was centuries ago of course, this is only the eighth." Tonight, the second planet from the sun's transit will be visible from 5 p. m. until sunset. English and colleagues will host a talk and viewing of the transit at the U of M's Fort Garry campus. " We hardly have any connection with objects in space when we live in the city because at night, all the lights are drowning out the stars," said English. " This is one time when we can actually see a celestial phenomenon," she said. Transits of Venus happen in pairs eight years apart, with more than a century between cycles. The last time the transit of Venus occured was on June 8, 2004. And it will be the last one until Dec. 10- 11, 2117. Manitoba has an interesting link to the transit of Venus. In 1769, the Royal Society of London sent scientists William Wales and Joseph Dymond to Prince of Wales Fort, a now- historic site near Churchill, to observe the transit of Venus in order to calculate the distance between the Earth and the sun. If you're looking for a dramatic celebration, the University of Winnipeg's physics department has teamed up with Theatre by the River to plan an ode to the transit, complete with a lecture about the celestial event by U of W physics Prof. Vesna Milosevic- Zdjelar, an observation of the transit and a reading of Winnipeg playwright Maureen Hunter's award- winning play Transit of Venus . Hunter's play is based on the life of French astronomer Guillaume Le Gentil, who left the woman he loved to observe the transit of Venus. " The play is a fantastic culmination of science and history with dramatic intrigue," said Matthew TenBruggencate, co- artistic director of Theatre by the River. " It helps us to remember that people who made these achievements are just like us. They wrestled with chasing fantastic dreams and chasing love and chasing each other." The Winnipeg Centre of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada and the Planetarium are hosting their own viewing at Assiniboine Park, complete with safetyfiltered telescopes that will get you up close and personal with the planet named for the Roman goddess of love and beauty. katherine. dow@ freepress. mb. ca WHEN he was a child, John Buhler dreamed of building tractors. Now, Buhler's lifetime in business, including owning a business building tractors, will help build agricultural capacity in Israel. Tonight's Negev Gala 2012, a fundraiser for the Jewish National Fund, is honouring John Buhler and his wife, Bonnie, for their philanthropy. " We're so honoured - it really was a surprise to us," Bonnie said. " It's a Jewish organization honouring a Mennonite - I took it as an even greater honour," John said, chuckling. Karla Berbrayer and Jessica Cogan, the gala's co- chairwomen, said they are pleased to honour the Buhlers. Berbrayer said it was easy to choose the Buhlers. " The Buhlers are an incredible couple in our community," she said. " They have given us so much philanthropy in our community. Whether it's the Manitoba Chamber Orchestra, the University of Winnipeg, or the Health Sciences Centre, they really cover quite the gamut in their support in our community." Cogan said, " We couldn't have found a better couple which emulates the Jewish National Fund than the Buhlers. " The JNF is all about giving back to the community, and that's the Buhlers too." The Negev Gala will be held at the Centennial Concert Hall at 7: 30 p. m. The JNF, which began in 1901, does environmental and agricultural work to help develop Israel. kevin. rollason@ freepress. mb. ca Gazers beware DIRECT and prolonged viewing of the sun can cause severe eye damage. NASA offers some tips on how to safely take in today's transit of Venus without injuring your eyes. . Stock up on a pair of solar glasses or welder's glasses shaded No. 14 or darker. Although it may appear as protective as sunglasses, this specialty eyewear offers filters that will protect your eyes from the sun's damaging rays. . Adding a filter to your telescope is recommended as the best way to view the transit of Venus closely and clearly. However, you should never look through a telescope without a solar filter on the large end or small solar filters that attach to the eyepiece. - source: National Aeronautics and Space Administration ( NASA) Sky- high spectacle rare treat Transit of Venus once- in- lifetime event By Katherine Dow Buhlers surprised and thrilled to be honoured at Negev Gala By Kevin Rollason Top News A 3,4 Canada A 5,9 World A 5.9 Manitoba A 6 Winnipeg A 7,8 Editorials A 10 Letters to the Editor A 11 City B 1 Business B 3 Entertainment C 1 Movies C 2 TV C 4 Miss Lonelyhearts C 4 Horoscope C 4 Pet Page C 5 Comics C 7 Diversions C 7 Family Notices C 9 Jumble C 10 Classified C 11 Sports D 1 Weather D 6 .
