The colour palette is the new look of the six community newspapers published by Canstar Community News and delivered to Free Press subscribers: The Headliner, The Herald, The Lance, The Metro, The Times and The Sou'wester . The newspapers' redesign represents the direction Canstar's community newspapers are going. " We're the voice of the community," said Michelle Pereira, publisher and sales manager at Canstar Community News. " The changes include the colour palette and fresh new logos. They are necessary for us to move forward." The community newspapers' templates have not been updated since 2007, and in addition to a new design, some of the papers will also be offering readers new features like a pet column and an auto section. Pereira collaborated with Kelvin Henderson of the Free Press production department on the new design. John Kendle, managing editor at Canstar Community News and editor of Uptown , supervised the team responsible for implementing the changes. kristy. hoffman@ freepress. mb. ca T HE trail of a $ 300,000 stolen tractor took a mucky turn last week, after the machine was discovered hidden under a mega- pile of manure. On Thursday, acting on a Crime Stoppers tip, Fisher Branch RCMP raided a farm in the Rural Municipality of Fisher. They came in search of a tractor which had been stolen from a farm equipment dealership in December 2010. And they found it - mired underneath a six- metre- deep mountain of manure, enough to cover the 12- metre- long machine. Two people were arrested and are facing charges. Police had to call in an excavator to dig the bright red tractor free of its unsavoury surroundings. Still, it took them two long days to get it out. The job was every bit as unpleasant as it sounds, RCMP spokeswoman Sgt. Line Karpish said on Tuesday. " Police work is glamourized in media," Karpish said. " But there's nothing glamourous about rooting around in manure. These guys deserve credit." The tractor's unlikely journey began on Dec. 21, 2010, when someone broke onto Leo's Sales and Service in the Rural Municipality of Rosser. The thieves hopped in the 2009- model Case IH Steiger 485 tractor, started the engine and drove the 23,586- kilogram machine straight through a fence to escape the property. They then drove the tractor across a field to the nearby road and loaded it onto a trailer before driving off. It's unknown if the tractor was ever put to use before it was hidden in the muck. " Maybe ( whoever stole the tractor) got scared, I don't know," mused Leo's salesperson Ryan Grandmont. " These machines, not everybody owns one, there's only so many sold. But why they put it in a hole, I don't know. It's almost like robbing a bank and then burning the money." Police investigated the theft in 2010 but ended up hitting a wall in their search, Karpish said. At Leo's, insurance covered the loss and staff figured the machine was long gone. They certainly didn't expect RCMP to phone eighteen months later with news. " It was funny, we couldn't believe it," Grandmont said, noting that nobody at Leo's could recall a similar case of such a large and distinctive piece of farm equipment being stolen. " The mood around here was laughable. Why a person would do that?" The tractor is back on the Leo's lot now, a stopover on its way to salvage. Meanwhile, a 24- year- old man from the RM of Fisher was arrested and faces charges of theft over $ 5,000, possessing goods obtained by crime and false pretences. A 22- year- old woman, also from the RM of Fisher, is facing a count of possessing stolen property. Both were released on a promise to appear. melissa. martin@ freepress. mb. ca Our community papers get a new look By Kristy Hoffman Offal hiding place By Melissa Martin Stolen tractor found under manure pile Top News A 3,4 Manitoba A 5,6 Canada / World A 7 World A 9 Editorials A 10 Letters to the Editor A 11 City B 1 Business B 5 Sports C 1 Family Notices C 8 Jumble C 10 Classified C 11 TV C 11 Entertainment D 1 Movies D 2 Horoscope D 3 Miss Lonelyhearts D 4 Comics D 6 Diversions D 7 Weather D 8 .
