Drink coffee, help a kid
MANITOBANS will have a chance to
enjoy a cup of Tim Hortons coffee today
and help send a local child to camp
in the process.
Today is Tim Hortons Camp Day
in Canada and the United States. The
fundraising event, which has been held
annually since 1975, sees Tim Hortons
restaurant owners donate all proceeds
from coffee sales that day to the Tim
Horton Children's Foundation ( THCF),
which sends more than 15,000 children
to camp each year.
Foundation coin boxes will also be
set up at each Tim's outlet, where
customers can donate unwanted pennies
and other cash donations will also
gladly be accepted.
" Camp Day gives us all a chance to
help a deserving kid take part in the
experience of a lifetime. All it takes is
your spare change, even just pennies,
to add up to something so significant
and meaningful, like sending kids
from your community to camp," said
Dave Newnham, THCF president and
executive director.
" Once a child attends our
camp, they return home
with a more positive
attitude and
greater confidence
about
their
future."
Last year,
3,700 Tim
Hortons restaurants
and their
customers raised
$ 9.9 million.
Saputo loses on bakery
MONTREAL - Despite stagnant
snack- cake sales, Canadian dairy
and cheese giant Saputo says it has
no plans to sell its struggling bakery
division after taking a $ 125- million
writedown that pushed its overall
fourth quarter to a loss.
" Our focus right now is to continue
to improve that division, and it is not
for sale," CEO Lino Saputo Jr. said
Tuesday in a conference call.
Efforts over the last two to three
years have allowed the small division
to at least keep its " head above water,"
he added.
Saputo said it continues to work on
increasing sales to the United States,
but the non- cash goodwill impairment
reflects stagnating market growth for
snack- cake sales.
Montreal- based Saputo ( TSX: SAP)
operates Vachon, Canada's top snackcake
brand and the maker of such desserts
as Jos. Louis, May West, Passion
Flake and Ah Caramel.
U. S. firm buys Miranda
MONTREAL - Broadcast equipment
company Miranda Technologies has
agreed to a friendly takeover offer
worth more than $ 370 million from
U. S.- based Belden Inc., expected to
help the combined company achieve
more growth in emerging markets.
Belden, which manufactures cable
and networking equipment and
competes with Miranda, has offered
$ 17 per share cash for the Montreal
company.
Miranda's share price jumped $ 6.48
or more than 60 per cent to trade for
$ 16.87, just short of the takeover bid.
Miranda has been pursuing sales in
emerging markets where television
viewing is growing and stations are
converting to high- definition signals.
Disney drops junk- food ads
NEW YORK - Disney says its programming
will no longer be sponsored
by junk food.
The Walt Disney Co. said Tuesday
it will become the first major media
company to ban such ads for its TV
channels, radio stations and websites
intended for children. That means kids
watching Saturday- morning children's
shows on Disney's ABC network will
no longer see ads for fast foods and
sugary cereals that don't meet the
company's nutrition standards.
The guidelines won't go into effect
until 2015 because of existing advertising
agreements.
At an event announcing the push,
U. S. President Barack Obama's wife,
Michelle, called the announcement a
" game changer."
RBC weighs in on takeover
TORONTO - The Royal Bank of
Canada has finally waded into the
takeover of the TMX Group by rival
financial institutions by urging regulators
to take action to ensure costs don't
escalate for companies that list on
financial markets.
Canada's largest bank says in filings
with the Ontario Securities Commission
that it largely supports the transaction
but has some concerns.
It fears costs will escalate when
Maple buys the TMX and combines
it with the Alpha trading system and
CDS, Canada's system for clearing and
settling stock trades.
In one of several submissions to
the Ontario regulator from various
stakeholders, RBC ( TSX: RY) suggests
Maple be forced to use Alpha's lower
trading fees as the basis for regulated
pricing instead of TMX's current fees.
