On Thursday, a group of 80 residents from Armstrong’s Point told council’s appeal committee the high school will increase its enrolment if a proposed 5,000- square- foot expansion moves ahead. Residents who live adjacent to the school said Westgate has increased from 250 students in the 1970s to nearly 350 students today, and the expansion could make traffic and parking problems worse in the historic neighbourhood. Another 100 people supported the school’s proposed expansion, including Westgate officials who said they need to upgrade their facility. Council’s appeal committee voted to deny the appeal. Appeal committee chairman Coun. Jeff Browaty ( North Kildonan) said traffic during peak times is an issue at schools across Winnipeg, and things are no different in Armstrong’s Point. “ It’s a challenge everywhere in the city,” he said. “ It’s not unique.” Cheers erupted from school supporters at the end of the four- hour appeal hearing. One opponent yelled “ shame!” Area resident and Westgate Coalition member Jim Fielder said the concerned group of citizens will now review their legal options. He said the City of Winnipeg has contravened its own zoning bylaws, and they may have cause to appeal the decision in the Court of Queen’s Bench. “ My reaction was they listened, but I’m not sure they heard,” Fielder said of the committee’s decision. Top Mountie heads west The top Mountie in Manitoba will be moving on to Alberta. RCMP D Division assistant commissioner Bill Robinson has been appointed CEO for the Alberta Gaming and Liquor Commission, beginning this September. Robinson had been the head of all RCMP officers who work across Manitoba since April 2008. From 2003 to 2006, Robinson was the officer in charge of criminal operations for Manitoba.
