Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 10, 2012, Winnipeg, Manitoba C M Y K PAGE A9 A9 SUNDAY, JUNE 10, 2012 ENTERTAINMENT ' You don't need a weatherman to know which way the wind blows,' but these days, a guide through the seemingly endless flurry of pop culture is just what we need. With that in mind, here is what's on the radar screen in TV, music and film for the coming week. In a RUSH to get to DALLAS What's coming in the week ahead TV BIG EVENTS: Dallas ( Bravo!, June 13, 8 p. m. ) BIG PICTURE: J. R. Ewing is back? For the younger generation out there, let me clear up a couple of things. J. R. is NOT an up- and- coming pop star or basketball player - in the hands of actor Larry Hagman, he is an apparently ageless oil tycoon. Doesn't 1991 feel like just yesterday? The combustible Ewing family and their rivals are back, including original series characters/ actors Sue Ellen ( Linda Gray) and Bobby Ewing ( Patrick Duffy). The revamp also focuses on the cleavage and chiselled- ab laden younger generation of Ewings. FORECAST: The future of the Ewing family business hangs in the balance in this soapy tale of greed, betrayal, sibling rivalry and generational conflict. Produced by TNT, the ads for the show state " They're back. And no, you're not dreaming." Time will tell whether you wish you were. But if you want some hot and heavy summer suds, Dallas could be worth a small- screen visit. Duffy) MUSIC BIG RELEASES on June 12: Metric ( Synthetica ), Rush ( Clockwork Angels ) BIG PICTURE: Sure, I could call Usher's Looking 4 Myself the big release of the week, but that would only go to his head ( which I'm told you can see from space). Instead, iconic Canadian rockers Rush are back with their 20th album, along with an outing from the always reliable Metric, led by sultry, energetic frontwoman Emily Haines. A heady blend of new wave, dance punk, electronic and alternative rock, Metric really adds up. FORECAST: You can't go wrong. One of indie music's finest or a trustworthy rock vintage. Personal taste will dictate whether you think Geddy Lee sounds like an angel. While Haines may look angelic, this frenzied rocker probably has a little sympathy for the devil ( and I'm sure the feeling is mutual). HONOURABLE MENTION: Jon and Roy ( Let it Go ), Wintersleep ( Hello Hum ). It's no ho hum week on the Canadian indie release front with additional releases by two emerging indie groups, the first a group of folk- rockers from Victoria and the latter a dreamy Juno- winning outfit from Halifax. Heighho, heigh- ho, it's off to the record store ( or iTunes) you go. - Postmedia News MOVIES BIG RELEASE: Rock of Ages ; That's My Boy ( June 15) BIG PICTURE: Warning: Rock of Ages may contain the music of Def Leppard, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger and REO Speedwagon. " The music of a generation" as the trailer intones - a generation with a lot to answer for. In this star- studded summer musical, Tom Cruise plays Stacee Jaxx - a sexy, perpetually shirtless hair- metal rocker from the 1980s. Cruise playing a sexy ' 80s icon? What a stretch. Speaking of stretches, Adam Sandler plays Andy Samberg's dad this week in the new comedy, That's My Boy . Given that Sandler is essentially Samberg's musicalcomedy forefather on Saturday Night Live , perhaps this absurd bit of casting may work after all. FORECAST: Sandler fans ( you know who you are) will love That's My Boy . But Rock of Ages looks like it will hit all the right notes as an unlikely musical summer blockbuster. Get ready for Alec Baldwin in an absurd wig ( it's like he's wearing a Big Lebowski costume) to steal scenes as an exrocker turned eccentric nightclub manager. A supporting cast that includes Catherine Zeta- Jones, Paul Giamatti and Bryan Cranston means the opening acts in this film will be just as good - if not better - than the main event.
