Deadline is Wednesday. Developer backs out CENTREVENTURE Development Corp.' s plans to replace a collection of 1913- era buildings at the north end of Princess Street with a new residential complex have suffered a setback. The local developer with which the city agency had been negotiating when it had the buildings demolished earlier this year - Sandhu Developments - has decided not to proceed with the project, according to the real estate agent who had been marketing it. Todd Labelle of Avison Young Winnipeg said Sandhu couldn't find anyone willing to invest in the project because they weren't confident they could find tenants willing to pay the estimated $ 1,200 a month in rent that would be needed to make the project economically feasible. " If it were two blocks south it would be sold many times over," Labelle said. But CentreVenture president and CEO Ross McGowan said the agency is talking to several other interested parties, and he expressed confidence another developer will be found. He noted CentreVenture found one to build the $ 12.7- million Peace Tower affordable housing project under construction on the other side of the street. Raining on Spain MADRID, Spain - Spain's grinding economic misery will get worse this year, despite the country's request for a European financial lifeline of up to 100 billion euros ($ 125 billion) to save its banks, Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy said Sunday. A day after the country conceded it needed outside help following months of denying it would seek assistance, Rajoy said more Spaniards will lose their jobs in a country where one out of every four are already unemployed. " This year is going to be a bad one," Rajoy said Sunday in his first comments about the rescue since it was announced the previous evening by his economy minister. The conservative prime minister added the economy, stuck in its second recession in three years, will still contract the previously predicted 1.7 per cent even with the help. Spain on Saturday became the fourth - and largest - of the 17 countries that use Europe's common currency to request a bailout - a big blow to a nation that a few years ago took pride as the continent's economic superstar, only to see it become the hot spot in the eurozone debt crisis. - staff / from the news services Business Calendar City of Winnipeg building permits Major projects for April Address Building permit description Value 870 Lagimodiere Blvd. Fire Repair Factory 800,000 2160 McGillivray Blvd. Interior Alteration Retail Store 900,000 190 Dysart Rd.
