Check out the Health Sciences Centre Home Lottery, which has a grand- prize property worth more than $ 1.5 million up for grabs “ It’s the most expensive lottery home in Manitoba history,” said Dawne Smithson, vice- president and chief operating officer of the Health Sciences Centre Foundation. “ It certainly draws more attention because it’s a riverfront property. That’s different from homes we’ve offered in the past.” In past years, the HSC Home Lottery grand- prize homes have been in south Winnipeg neighbourhoods, such as Fort White and Royalwood. This year, the grand- prize home is in Charleswood, and has been built specifically for the lottery. “ We wanted to offer something new and different and exciting to ticket buyers. We literally purchased property and built the home on it,” said Smithson. The result is a home with nearly 5,000 square feet of finished living space and a three- car attached garage. Thanks to the elaborate property, the HSC Home Lottery has seen a tremendous boost in ticket sales. “ We usually have really strong ticket sales, but this year our ticket sales are going to be really good,” Smithson said. “ I think ticket buyers are responding to the fact that it’s an attractive home, it’s a nice riverfront location, and it’s just a tremendous cause to be contributing to.” All proceeds from the HSC Home Lottery go toward HSC’s Kleyson Institute for Advanced Medicine, a clinical research facility that allows scientists and clinicians access to innovative technology for research purposes. Tickets are $ 100 each or three for $ 250. A five- pack is $ 375. For ticket information, visit www. hschomelottery. com/ or call 1- 866- 246- 4723. The early- bird deadline is midnight Thursday. katherine. dow@ freepress. mb. ca A decision by Manitoba Public Insurance to open a dedicated hail claims centre depends on the number of claims opened today. As of 4 p. m. Monday, a total of 1,100 hails claims had been opened with MPI in connection to a major thunderstorm that dropped hailstones throughout Manitoba, including Winnipeg. MPI spokesman Brian Smiley said the Crown auto insurer won’t know until late today whether it should open a special claims centre to deal only with vehicles damaged by hail. Hail as big as walnuts fell across southern Manitoba Saturday night, from Gretna to Emerson to Winnipeg. One of the worst hailstorms came in July 1996 when 24,494 hail- related claims were made. That cost $ 53 million in damage. The most significant storm came August 2001 when more than 2,500 hail- related claims were reported to MPI. Hail claims centre depends on demand HSC’s $ 1.5- M home prize its biggest jackpot ever By Katherine Dow LIBERAL Leader Jon Gerrard has called on Manitoba’s children’s advocate to resign over her comments Friday expressing doubt over the value of the Phoenix Sinclair inquiry. Gerrard told the legislature Monday it was “ unacceptable” the province had a children’s advocate who didn’t support the accountability that would come from an inquiry into Phoenix’s death. Gerrard called on Family Services Minister Jennifer Howard to demand Darlene MacDonald’s resignation “ and bring in a child advocate who advocates on behalf of the children instead of advocating on behalf of the child and family services authorities.” Howard said MacDonald is answerable to the entire legislature and not just her office. “ She’s an independent officer of the legislature,” Howard said. “ He ( Gerrard) was on the committee that appointed her as the children’s advocate. And I do not believe that we fire people simply because we do not agree with them.” Phoenix was five when she was killed in 2005. It took more than nine months for officials to realize she was missing despite the fact she had been in CFS care and only recently returned to her birth mother. In 2008, her mother and stepfather were found guilty of first- degree murder. Children’s advocate must go: Gerrard JOHN WOODS / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS HSC Foundation officials say the attractiveness of the prize home has driven up sales.
