S. counterparts in upcoming contract talks, General Motors CEO Dan Akerson said Tuesday. " When we built the plants in Canada, the exchange rate was materially different than it is today," Akerson told a news conference ahead of GM's shareholders' meeting in Detroit. " As a result, and the CAW knows this... Canada is the most expensive place to build a car in the world right now." The CAW heads into Detroit Three bargaining this summer under pressure to match labour costs with the UAW. According to the Ann Arbor, Mich.- based Center for Automotive Research, Canadian auto workers earn almost $ 7 an hour more than their U. S. counterparts. A high Canadian dollar as well as UAW contracts that offer a two- tiered wage scale and replace annual wage hikes with profit- sharing are hammering Canadian competitiveness. The CAW, which represents about 25,000 workers at assembly plants at Ford, Chrysler and GM, has traditionally resisted profit- sharing over wage increases, however Chris Buckley, chair of the CAW's GM master bargaining committee, admitted the union faces a tough battle.
