B ELLEFONTE, Pa. - A former Penn State assistant coach who was a central figure in Joe Paterno's downfall testified Tuesday he heard a " skin- on- skin smacking sound" in a campus locker- room one night in 2001 and saw something that was " more than my brain could handle." Jerry Sandusky was standing naked in the showers behind a boy, slowly moving his hips, Mike Mc- Queary told the jury. McQueary, one of the star witnesses in the child sexual abuse case against Sandusky, said he had no doubt he was witnessing anal sex. He testified he slammed his locker shut loudly as if to say, " Someone's here! Break it up!" Sandusky, 68, is on trial on charges he molested 10 boys over a 15- year period. Authorities say he abused them in hotels, at his home and inside the football team's quarters. The former assistant coach and founder of an acclaimed youth charity has denied the allegations. Paterno was fired last fall, shortly after Sandusky's arrest, when it became known that McQueary had told the head football coach about the shower episode a decade ago. Two months after his dismissal, Paterno died of lung cancer at 85. Sandusky lawyer Karl Rominger pressed McQueary during crossexamination about discrepancies in his estimate of the boy's age. McQueary replied: " If ( you) want to argue about 9, 10, 11, 12... the fact is he had sex with a minor, a boy." Testifying on Day 2 of Sandusky's trial, McQueary said he went to the football team building one night. As he entered the locker- room, he said, he heard a noise. " Very much skin- on- skin smacking sound," he said. McQueary said he went to Paterno's house the next morning and relayed what he had seen. Penn State administrator Tim Curley called him a week later to say the school had looked into it, McQueary testified. Earlier Tuesday, the teenager who triggered the grand jury investigation became the second of the alleged victims to take the stand. Choking back tears, he said Sandusky kissed him, fondled him and engaged in oral sex with him during numerous sleepovers in the basement of Sandusky's home. The accuser, labelled Victim No. 1 by a grand jury, said he eventually told a guidance counsellor Sandusky was molesting him, only to be told: " He has a heart of gold, and he wouldn't do something like that." During cross- examination, Sandusky lawyer Joe Amendola asked the teen whether he had financial motives for bringing his accusations. " All I know is I'm here to tell the truth about what happened to me, just like everybody else," he replied. - The Associated Press By Genaro Armas and Mark Scolforo Eyewitness testifies on abuse Coach says he saw sex act in progress GENE J. PUSKAR / THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Penn State University assistant football coach Mike McQueary arrives at court to testify in the trial of Jerry Sandusky. Russia aiding Syria: U. S. BEIRUT - The U. S. accused Russia of escalating the Syrian conflict by sending attack helicopters to President Bashar Assad's regime, and UN observers were attacked Tuesday with stones, metal rods and gunfire that blocked them from a besieged rebelheld town where civilians were feared trapped by government shelling. The accusation by U. S. Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton that Moscow was arming the Assad regime came as the top UN peacekeeping official said Syria was already in a state of civil war. " We are concerned about the latest information we have that there are attack helicopters on the way from Russia to Syria, which will escalate the conflict quite dramatically," Clinton said in Washington. Victim's family grateful THE Chinese family of Jun Lin released a heartfelt letter to the public on Tuesday, expressing their gratitude for the support they've received since their son's devastating dismemberment slaying. " Everyone has showed great sympathy and compassionate support to help to make things easier for us. We are deeply touched by the kindness inspired by this human tragedy." Lin's torso was discovered in a suitcase outside a working- class apartment building in Montreal on May 29. The slaying of Lin sparked an international manhunt which led to the arrest in Berlin last week of Luka Rocco Magnotta, a porn actor and model. Attack victim improving MIAMI - A homeless man whose face was mostly chewed off in a bizarre attack in Miami is in good spirits, talking and walking with the help of hospital staff, doctors said Tuesday. Ronald Poppo's left eye was removed, but doctors are trying to find a way to restore vision in his right eye. He will remain at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Ryder Trauma Center for several more weeks and will need more surgeries before he can explore the options for reconstructing his face. " He's pleased to report to all of you that he's feeling well, he's eating, he's walking around with physical therapy, he's talking with us," said Nicholas Namias, a University of Miami trauma surgeon and co- director of the centre. Poppo has been at the hospital since he was attacked May 26 by Rudy Eugene for reasons that are still unclear. Cloned skin a success JOHANNESBURG, South Africa - A three- year- old South African girl who suffered severe burns over 80 per cent of her body after an incident at a barbecue has successfully undergone a rare surgery that gave her a new layer of cloned skin, her surgeon said. " Everything went quite smoothly," said Dr. Ridwan Mia, a reconstructive surgeon who performed the surgery Monday in a Johannesburg hospital. Isabella Kruger was injured on New Year's Eve when a container of fire lighting fluid exploded. Mia said he did not hold much hope for her survival when he met her in January. Isabella was in the hospital for several months battling pneumonia and kidney failure, and suffered several cardiac arrests. Doctors stabilized her so that Monday's complex skin transplant surgery could be performed. - from the news services AROUND TheWorld A_ 09_ Jun- 13- 12_ FP_ 01. indd A9 6/ 12/ 12 9: 50: 59 PM ;
