My medications have been tremendously reduced. Thank goodness I’ve never had a cardiac event and Reh- Fit has helped me prevent that.” He spoke at the Reh- Fit Centre on Wednesday, at an event celebrating the centre’s new certification by the Medical Fitness Association ( MFA). This makes the Reh- Fit Centre, located on Taylor Avenue, the only MFA certified medical fitness facility in Canada. The MFA’s certification is a seal of approval a facility has met high standards of quality and service in health care. The process to achieve certification is so rigorous, noted board chairman Ken Lee, it took the Reh- Fit Centre two years of preparation, followed by a two- day onsite review. “ This certification is earned and not awarded,” said Lee, during the announcement. “ It places us in the ranks of an elite few certified medical fitness facilities around the world.” The Reh- Fit Centre is a not- for- profit, health and fitness centre. It was founded in 1979 after Dr. David Mymin noticed the positive responses his patients undergoing post- cardiac rehabilitation had to physical activity. He would become the centre’s first medical director. Though the centre was established at its current Taylor location in 1979, the building was renovated and expanded in 2006 into the current facility. “ By taking the comprehensive approach to wellness, we can maintain health and prevent and manage chronic disease,” said Jim Rondeau, minister of healthy living. “ It’s a proactive way to relieve pressure on our public health- care system, reduce dependency on prescriptions and the tertiary care system.” katherine. dow@ freepress. mb. ca By Katherine Dow Reh- Fit Centre races ahead of pack with certification COLE BREILAND / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS Winnipeg’s Reh- Fit Centre is Canada’s first and only MFA certified medical fitness facility.
