SOME of Winnipeg's hidden historical gems were honoured Thursday morning at the Doors Open Winnipeg Awards hosted at the Winnipeg Free Press News Caf�. The ceremony, put on by Heritage Winnipeg, celebrated the city's best architecture, tour, restoration, overall experience and the city's hidden gem. Barber House in North Point Douglas, one of Winnipeg's oldest houses, won for best restoration. The Manitoba Law Courts won best tour and the Manitoba Legislature won best architecture. The city's hidden gem was awarded to Saints Volodymyr and Olga Cathedral, a Ukrainian Catholic church in the North End, while best overall experience went to the Historical Museum of St. James. A BREAK- IN at the Progressive Conservative offices at the legislative building has left its victims puzzled and upset. Several computers were stolen overnight Wednesday from first- floor offices belonging to five Tory MLAs and support staff. The thefts were discovered Thursday morning. There were no signs of forced entry. Progressive Conservative caucus chairman Ralph Eichler ( Lakeside) said his colleagues are " very disturbed" by the break- in. " It's very devastating when you've been personally victimized through no fault of your own," he said Thursday. It's unknown how thieves got in. Asked if a window may have been open overnight, Eichler allowed that was possible. " The building is warm, as we all know," he said. Eichler could not provide a dollar estimate on the value of the stolen equipment. The computers contained information the party used to prepare for question period and other material. The information was password protected. Premier Greg Selinger said an investigation is underway. The probe involves more than the thefts from the Conservative office, he said - a government staffer also lost property. " That is part of the investigation." It is too early to tell whether security at the legislative building needs to be improved, Selinger said. He noted in recent months, an electronic key system has been introduced, with most of the building's locks changed. The building was far from quiet Wednesday evening. Work crews replacing a skylight at the front of the building made a great deal of noise late into the evening, those who were there said.
