The Canadian Humane Society posted a petition just before midnight Friday urging the Selinger government to drop plans to release the five- monthold bear cub into the wild, and six hours later, more than 1,200 people pleaded with the government to keep Makoon in captivity. The names kept coming all day. The Selinger government plans to release the orphaned bear cub into the wild within the next few weeks, but the humane society wants Makoon sent to the Ontario sanctuary Bear With Us, where the CHS believes Makoon can be rehabilitated and prepared to go back into the wild 18 months from now. Winnipeg's Dana MacDonald- Farquhar said Saturday she's alerting the media and every member of government she can reach about the petition. " The City of Winnipeg has no jurisdiction, but it's going to reflect on Winnipeg," said MacDonald Farquhar. " This whole death sentence for our modern Winnie the Pooh is going to be a massive black eye. " We're about to sentence our little Winnie the Pooh to death, the poor little bugger. " I'm really excited how he's gone from a local cause to a global cause," she said. ' Death sentence for Pooh' By Nick Martin A sampling of the global outrage He will NOT survive at the age of 5 months old. This will be a death sentence for this little guy. - Rita Clark, Missouri Please listen to the experts. Do not release this young cub now; he will not survive. - Jennifer Ellis, United Kingdom If releasing Makoon at five months would be OK then cubs would be leaving their mothers at that age. - Charlotte Swift, France Even from Australia, I beseech you... Please reconsider and send Makoon the Bear With Us Sanctuary for proper rehabilitation. - Lyn Kinnane, Australia Is this what they do for attention in Manitoba? Do they have a law that preschoolers should play in the streets? This is insane. - Larry Lubonty, New York nick. martin@ freepress. mb. ca Humane society's petition to save Makoon goes global PAPA'S GOT A BRAND NEW BAG James Brown No. 7 in Book of Rock countdown.
