NO NO CHARGE CHARGE DIESEL DIESEL POLICE have arrested a man in connection with a sexual assault Saturday and are asking other possible victims to come forward. At about 8: 25 p. m., police responded to the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue after a 28- year- old woman was sexually assaulted. The woman had been walking in the area when she was approached from behind by a man, who groped her and tried to push her into some nearby bushes. The victim was able to flee and call police. A short time later, police arrested a 19- year- old man in the area. He has been charged with sexual assault and was released on a promise to appear. Police believe the man may be responsible for similar incidents. They are asking anyone who may have been groped by a man on a bike in the area of Main Street and Redwood Avenue or Portage Avenue and Ingersoll Street to contact the sex crimes unit at 204- 986- 9625 or Crime Stoppers at 204- 786- TIPS ( 8477). The man is described as Caucasian, about 6- foot- 3, 235 pounds with a heavy build and short, dark brown hair. Fire damages house AN early morning fire caused thousands of dollars of damage to an Elmwood house. Firefighters were called at 2: 18 a. m. on Sunday to the one- and- a- half- storey home at 240 McIntosh Ave. The blaze caused $ 132,000 in damage to the home and another $ 2,000 in damage to a neighbouring house. There were no injuries because the house was vacant at the time of the fire. The cause is still under investigation. Indecent act investigated POLICE are looking for a man who exposed himself to a woman waiting for a bus on St. Anne’s Road. The indecent act happened at about 12: 25 p. m. Saturday. A 58- year- old woman was waiting for a bus near Poplarwood Avenue when she saw a man walking towards her while exposing himself. The man fled. He is described as Caucasian, between 40 and 45, six feet tall with blond hair. Anyone with information about the incident should call the East District crime unit at 986- 2857 or Crime Stoppers at 204- 786- TIPS ( 8477). Teen girl dies in crash A 17- year- old Winnipeg girl died in a single- vehicle rollover just after midnight Friday in the RM of DeSalaberry, RCMP report. A 24- year- old woman from St- Pierre- Jolys was taken to hospital with non- life- threatening injuries, said Sgt. Line Karpish. The fatality occurred on Gauthier Road and alcohol is believed to be a factor, Karpish said. The driver of the car appeared to have lost control on the gravel road and the car rolled, she said. Police have not released names. Funnel clouds spotted SATURDAY’S storms resulted in funnel cloud sightings in southern Manitoba and destroyed a metal building in Dryden, Ont. Dale Berrey was in the building when a strong wind, which he believes was a tornado, destroyed the structure. “ It could have been worse,” Berrey said Saturday. “ Nobody got hurt. It’s all property damage. And I have insurance, so I’ll come out OK.” Berrey knew a heavy storm was coming, so he went to a safe location in the building. The building was lifted off the foundation and the wind scattered many of its contents. Meantime, funnel clouds were seen in Arborg after a tornado watch was issued for Arborg, Hnausa, Riverton, Hecla and the RM of Bifrost. Pleas made for bear PLEAS from around the world and a petition from the Canadian Humane Society urge the province to drop plans to release a five- month- old bear cub that was plucked from the wild in April. The province took the cub, named Makoon by the St. Malo family that found the bear alone in a ditch, and plans to release it into the wild in the next few weeks. The family wanted to take the bear to a sanctuary in Ontario, but laws prevent interprovincial transportation of wild animals. The humane society petition also wants the province to send Makoon to the Ontario sanctuary, where it can be rehabilitated and released to the wild 18 months from now. Police arrest man following sexual assault In Brief MIKE DEAL / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS ARCHIVES Makoon the bear is scheduled to be released back into the wild.
