The Winnipeg Jets True North Foundation announced Monday it's giving more than $ 1 million to 43 local charities, a sum that took everybody involved with the team, including co- owner Mark Chipman, by surprise. " The amount of capital raised far exceeded what we anticipated. It's a big responsibility. This has always been part of our mandate; now we have a lot more horsepower," he said. During the 2011- 12 NHL season, money was raised through the sale of 50- 50 tickets at Jets home games, the sale of Jets licence plates, the Mike Keane Celebrity Classic, the Ranger Golf Tournament, the 2010- 11 gala dinner and various donations and third- party events. By comparison, the Manitoba Moose Yearling Foundation, True North's charity arm when it ran an AHL franchise, donated $ 2.3 million over 15 years. Chipman said in the early years of the Moose, the foundation was lucky if it could donate $ 100,000 annually. The foundation's off- season work is far from finished. Later this summer, an announcement will be made regarding its contribution to both minor hockey in Winnipeg and the True North Hockey Academy. The latter not only teaches underprivileged children how to play hockey and outfits them with new equipment but also provides positive role models and uses hockey as a means of helping them become the best kids that they can be. Last year, about 150 children went through the program, and Chipman said that number is expected to triple next year. Dwayne Green, executive director of the foundation, said he and his team were most surprised by the fans' enthusiasm for 50- 50 tickets and the Jets licence plates. " We're over the moon with what we've been able to accomplish," Green said. The organizations receiving the money feel the same way. Roger Berrington, director of Canu, a mentor- driven program for kids living in poverty that received $ 25,000 from the foundation, said the money will be put toward programming, equipment and supplies for soccer, baseball and track and field, including running shoes, T- shirts and shorts. " We want to make some connections with the kids' families and plant the seed of post- secondary education with them," he said. Villa Rosa, a safe haven for young, single, pregnant women, most of whom are aboriginal, also received $ 25,000. Mindy Barsky- Veitch, its director of development, said the money will be put toward an outdoor teaching garden that will be used for naming ceremonies, meditation circles and smudging. " It will be a place where they feel they belong and a cultural link for women who are far away from home," she said. Some quick math indicates the Jets foundation will have a substantial surplus even after making these donations. Chipman said the foundation decided to hold some money back, perhaps for an endowment, because it's far too early to tell if last year's fundraising efforts will be matched next season. He said he'd like to be able to maintain a minimum donation of $ 1 million annually. The foundation also added a pair of new directors on Monday. Longtime original Winnipeg Jets centre and current city Coun. Thomas Steen and Brandy Ladd, wife of current Jets captain Andrew Ladd, have joined the board. geoff. kirbyson@ freepress. mb. ca MARCEL A. Desautels would sing as a boy soprano in the St. Boniface Basilica for the sheer joy of singing. Singing at The Hollow Mug when he was a little older, that was different: " It paid - I was in law school," Desautels recalled Monday. Tonight, he fulfils a lifetime dream by performing opera with the Winnipeg Symphony Orchestra at the Centennial Concert Hall. Desautels is an enormously successful businessman and one of Canada's leading philanthropists. Among his many gifts was $ 20 million to the University of Manitoba for the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music. At one point, he said, he was almost tempted to enter into one of those lotteries that offered the chance to perform as a prize. But then, an " invitation came out of the blue" from Alexander Mickelthwate, the WSO music director. Desautels has performed at the music faculty and at homecoming concerts, but never before 2,000 people in such august surroundings. " I sang later on, as my voice changed, as a soloist at midnight mass, weddings, funerals," but he has no regrets about going into law instead of hitting the road to try to develop a music career. " It's Boston Pops- style" tonight, Desautels said. " I'll be performing Vesti la Giubba from Pagliacci. It's a dramatic song; it's a play within a play. It's supposed to make the audience laugh, but he's crying." For a second, lighter piece - this is, after all, a summer solstice concert - he'll sing Dein Ist Mein Ganzes Herz by Franz Lehar, who's better known for works such as The Merry Widow , Desautels said. He'll be decked out in a black tie and tails to perform. And yes, he'll be nervous. " You're always nervous," he said while rehearsing at the music faculty. " You'd better be nervous; it keeps the adrenalin flowing." Desautels said work is progressing well on the 500- seat concert hall and performing atrium, key pieces in the transformation of U of M's music faculty. Desautels said he is confident the five- year process just getting underway to reduce U of M's 20 faculties to about 13 will not affect music, and it will remain a separate faculty. " This faculty is really starting to predominate in Canada," he said. " This will be a really big deal when it opens in the fall of 2014." Of course, there will be a concert for the official opening, and of course, Desautels will perform. " I'm booked." nick. martin@ freepress. mb. ca THE University of Winnipeg has appointed Bob Silver to a second term as university chancellor, effective July 1. Silver is president of Western Glove Works, co- owner of the Warehouse One retail chain and co- owner of the Free Press . He became the U of W's seventh chancellor three years ago. " Bob Silver has been a tireless advocate for the University of Winnipeg and has brought real commitment and enthusiasm to his role as chancellor," said Craig Lee, chairman of the board of regents. " He has been a strong contributor to the governance of the university, providing wise counsel to me, and as a director of the University of Winnipeg Foundation." " The University of Winnipeg plays an incredibly important role in providing post- secondary education to our children, to providing access to those in need, to bridging the gap between communities, to practising and teaching inclusiveness, and to further developing our downtown and our city," Silver said. " I am honoured to continue in my role as chancellor and to contribute to the university's future." The position of chancellor is a volunteer position with a renewable threeyear term. Primary responsibilities include participating in convocations and conferring degrees, participating in meetings of the board of regents, senate and committees, and assisting with government relations and promotion of the university.
