O TTAWA - Troubles continue for
the Canadian Museum for Human
Rights as its loses the professional
fundraiser hired just a year ago to help
bring the project's funding to fruition.
Dav Cvitkovic is leaving as CEO of
the Friends of the Canadian Museum
for Human Rights. She took on the role
in July 2011. She's leaving June 27.
Friends of CMHR is a non- profit entity,
separately incorporated from the
museum itself. It is tasked with raising
enough private- sector contributions to
finish building the structure, create a
$ 50- million endowment fund to bring
students to the museum and raise $ 9
million to $ 10 million annually to cover
operating expenses once the museum
opens.
Friends board chairman John Stefaniuk
told the Free Press Cvitkovic " resigned
to pursue other opportunities."
" The board is thankful for all the
time she spent advancing the interests
of the museum," he said.
Stefaniuk informed key donors and
supporters of the museum of Cvitkovic's
departure in an email Wednesday.
Stefaniuk said the decision to leave
was Cvitkovic's and the fundraising
will continue without interruption.
" I don't think it will set back the fundraising,"
he said.
Susan Graham, the director of development
for the Friends of CMHR, is
taking over the role of CEO on an interim
basis.
Stefaniuk said there are some " exciting"
announcements to come over the
summer.
Cvitkovic took the job a year ago as
the museum needed to start focusing
fundraising efforts outside Manitoba.
When she arrived, about 73 per cent
of the 6,000 donors to the museum were
from Manitoba, and it became clear
that in order to reach the final goal,
more money had to be found outside the
province.
She had a long resum of fundraising
work, including as the brains behind
the Canadian Arthritis Society's Joints
in Motion campaign.
Within a few months of starting,
however, the end zone for the Friends'
campaign was moved. Although officially
the campaign hasn't increased
its $ 150- million fundraising target,
cost overruns on the construction of
the museum mean it's likely the need is
closer to $ 200 million.
Gail Asper, the national campaign
chairwoman, confirmed that amount
in March after the cost of building the
museum soared from the original $ 265
million to a revised estimate of $ 350
million. The museum will also no longer
open in 2013 as planned, and the new
2014 date is also tentative depending on
fundraising.
The province has committed $ 40 million
and the city $ 20 million toward the
capital campaign. Ottawa is contributing
$ 100 million in capital. The museum
is a federal Crown corporation and
the first national museum to be built
outside the Ottawa area. Ottawa has
steadfastly refused to put another cent
into the project, leaving the Friends to
carry the ball.
Cvitkovic is the latest in a string of
high- profile departures from the museum
and its various boards.
In February 2011, chief operating
officer Patrick O'Reilly stepped down
after two years. A month later, chief
knowledge officer Victoria Dickenson
left to pursue a job in Ontario.
Last December, Arni Thorsteinson,
the chairman of the museum's board
and a longtime museum supporter, left
his post, reportedly in a power struggle
with Prime Minister Stephen Harper.
He was replaced by Calgary accountant
Ted Hughes, who is a friend of
Harper's and who was the board's vicechairman.

ONE of the world's last remaining areas of southern boreal
forest is a step closer to becoming a UNESCO World Heritage
Site.
Premier Greg Selinger, attending a UN conference on
sustainable development in Rio de Janeiro, announced
Pauingassi and Little Grand Rapids First Nations had submitted
land- management plans that will help move forward
international recognition of the area.
" These plans form a critical part of the UNESCO World
Heritage Site proposal to recognize this tract of southern
boreal forest. They will also help ensure the long- term social,
economic and environmental well- being of local residents
and all Manitobans," Selinger said in a statement.
The plans for each First Nation have been officially submitted
to the province for approval and will be finalized
following public consultations.
The planning areas form part of a 33,400- square- kilometre
expanse of protected southern boreal forest currently
under consideration for the UNESCO World Heritage
Site designation as an area of outstanding natural and
cultural universal value.
The area, located east of Lake Winnipeg and extending
into Ontario, is considered rare because it is one of the last
remaining sections of southern boreal undisturbed by industrial
development. It is home to threatened species such
as the woodland caribou.
