Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 23, 2012, Winnipeg, Manitoba winnipegfreepress. com P AST the Ferris wheel and the candy floss booths, past the high- dive platform and the mini donuts, past the taffy apples and the merry- go- round, Martha awaits her fate. Martha, a pretty little tortoiseshell cat, is set to be spayed at the fair's newest display. The L* O* V* E Animal Hospital is performing three to five spay/ neuter operations a day in a specially- built surgical suite with windows. Bleachers that seat approximately 40 are close to full at every " show." " We're always looking for new ways to engage the audience," said Garth Rogerson, CEO of the Red River Exhibition Association. He saw a similar display at the Minnesota State Fair, then spoke to officials at the Winnipeg Humane Society and the Manitoba Veterinary Medical Association about developing one here. Rogerson, a cat lover himself- his is named Velvet - said they were keen for the chance to do a bit of public education on the importance of spaying and neutering pets, but the No. 1 concern was for the cats' safety. They are brought onto the fairgrounds before it opens, the walls of the surgical suite are extra thick to shut out noise while cats wait for surgery, and they are unconscious when brought into the windowed area. " They don't even know they are at the fair," Rogerson said. Martha may have been unaware of being at a fair Friday afternoon, but she was getting cranky all the same. There's no eating before your surgery. Ladybird, a grey tabby, and a still- groggy Oscar, a handsome fluffy black cat, recovered in nearby cages. All the cats will be up for adoption at the humane society following their surgeries. Kerry Ward, a volunteer with the humane society, was comforting Martha. In her 10 years of volunteering, Ward has fostered dozens of cats and adopted 14 of them. She used to take in the mothers with litters of kittens. But it's better " to spay and neuter," she said. " It's the most important thing you can do for your pet." Dr. Erika Anseeuw, a veterinarian who is the director of animal health with the Winnipeg Humane Society, said a normal day at the shelter sees between 20 and 40 animals spayed or neutered. Last year, the society fixed more than 6,500 animals - some of them through programs that help people with low incomes care for their animals, she said. However, about 2,000 cats a year are euthanized at the society. Some are for health reasons, but too often it's for space reasons, said Anseeuw - especially between July and November, when the city's cat population explodes. There's great interest in the display, said Anseeuw. The surgical suite at the Winnipeg Humane Society has windows, but it's still something to " perform" for standing- room- only crowds at the Ex, she said. For those not up for watching cat surgery, the fair has other new attractions as well. There's a comedy/ high dive show, competitive pedal tractor pulls for kids, and the Lord Strathcona Mounted Troop, Rogerson said. Extreme Sing- along in Prairie Town Adventures is proving very popular, he said. Microphone stands are sprinkled throughout the area, and people just step up and start belting out their favourite tunes - a sort of karaoke on the run. Despite last week's bad weather, attendance numbers are only slightly short of last year's, Rogerson said - 2011 was a record year, with 223,183 visitors to the exhibition. He's not expecting this year to rival that, especially following five days of rain this week, but the hot sunny weather over the weekend should push the numbers to the neighbourhood of 2010' s figure of about 180,000.
