New sex charges against man ADDITIONAL charges have been filed against a man who has been accused of preying on teenage girls near the St. Vital Shopping Centre. Winnipeg police said Huu Nhut Lee, 30, was charged this week with two counts of sexual assault and one count of sexual interference, in connection with attacks on Jan. 18 and May 4. The new charges are in addition to three counts of sexual assault for alleged attacks on girls aged 18, 15, and 14 between May 31 and June 6 that were announced two weeks ago. On Jan. 18, a 19- year- old woman was followed off a transit bus near Fermor Avenue and St. Mary’s Road. The male passenger allegedly assaulted her as he walked past. On May 4, a 13- year- old girl said a man sexually assaulted her as she entered the mall and the man walked past her. Police spokesman Const. Jason Michalyshen said Lee was released on bail after his last arrest but he’s back in custody on the new charges. Disraeli overpass north opens THE new Disraeli overpass will open to northbound traffic this afternoon. Vehicles travelling north will take the new overpass and continue onto the existing Disraeli bridge, while southbound traffic will use the existing Disraeli overpass and bridge. The Gladstone Street turnoff will remain closed. All lanes of the Disraeli Bridges will open in October, if construction stays on time. On Sept. 24, 2008, city council approved the Disraeli Bridges project, a public- private partnership, or P3, with a budget of $ 195 million. The project includes an active- transportation bridge for cyclists, pedestrians and others who commute without using motorized vehicles, and winnipeg. ca states smooth traffic, cyclist and pedestrian flow will result. The new bridges will replace the 50- year- old bridges that currently span the Red River and the Canadian Pacific Railway main line. Teen in critical condition A 19- year- old woman went to hospital in critical condition Friday after her Toyota Echo and a heavy truck collided. The Toyota was southbound on Route 90 north of Inkster Boulevard around 1: 30 p. m. and the truck was turning west. The man driving the truck wasn’t injured. Stonewall RCMP are investigating. RCMP probe Thompson stabbing RCMP are still investigating a stabbing that injured three people on Friday around 4 a. m. in Thompson at an apartment on Princeton Drive. A 38- year- old man is in stable condition, and a 26- year- old man and a 21- year- old woman, all from Thompson, were treated and released. A 22- year- old woman and a 19- year- old man were found at another residence and arrested. Their names haven’t been released. Anybody with information about the incident should call Thompson RCMP at 204- 677- 6909. Sun meets sand this weekend IT seems it has been a long time coming, but this weekend the skies and beaches are joining in a marriage of summertime bliss. Environment Canada is predicting a high of 26 C and sunny skies today followed by highs of 23 C on Sunday, 26 C on Monday, 29 C on Tuesday, 32 C on Wednesday and 30 C on Thursday. And while it’s hot, it’s also good to know it’s safe to go in the water. Provincial water testing showed levels of E. coli were within recreational water quality limits during the last week at all monitored beaches. You will have to watch out if you take a boat onto Lake Winnipeg. Environment Canada has issued a strong wind warning for both the lower and upper basins of the lake today. The winds are predicted to increase to north 20 knots by the afternoon before dropping in the evening. Horse, carriage hit by car THREE people have been taken to hospital with undetermined injuries after the horses and carriage in which they were riding Friday evening north of St. Laurent was struck from behind by a car on Highway 6. RCMP Cpl. Miles Hiebert said emergency personnel and police were still investigating at the scene at 9 p. m. The horses were not injured, he said. Hiebert said that the carriage is a privatelyowned buggy, and that they appear to have just gone out for an evening ride. Further details will be released today. T HE world’s best- known lingerie retailer is coming to Winnipeg. Victoria’s Secret will open an 8,500- square- foot store on the main floor of Polo Park mall on Dec. 1, just in time to catch the Christmas rush. “ It’s a store for woman but men will love it, too,” said Deborah Green, Polo Park’s general manager. “ We’re always looking for the best variety of retailers. We’ve had people asking us about Victoria’s Secret for many years. Sometimes these deals take a while because we don’t have the space, but we’re persistent.” The store will feature a wide assortment of Victoria’s Secret- branded bras, panties, and sleepwear, swimwear and beauty products. And for any husbands or boyfriends who are nervous about doing this kind of shopping, don’t worry. The store’s comfortable environment is the brainchild of founder Roy Raymond, who felt embarrassed buying lingerie for his wife in a department store back in the 1970s. Green said many Winnipeggers are familiar with Victoria’s Secret because of its strong international branding and have shopped at its location at the Columbia Mall in Grand Forks. Polo Park had to play a little musical chairs to provide the Ohio- based retailer with the amount of space it required. Both Ricki’s and Cleo have moved into different premises to accommodate the new arrival. Two stores have left the mall, too. Stitches, a clothing retailer, has closed its doors, but its parent company, Urban Planet, recently opened in the mall. La Senza Express, a small lingerie boutique, has also been shuttered, but a full- size La Senza store remains on the mall’s second floor. Victoria’s Secret first entered the Canadian market two years ago at Eaton Centre. geoff. kirbyson@ freepress. mb. ca In Brief Victoria’s Secret whispered here By Geoff Kirbyson KEN GIGLIOTTI / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS ARCHIVES The new northbound Disraeli overpass opens today.
