NO NO CHARGE CHARGE DIESEL DIESEL M ANITOBA Aboriginal leaders say five suicides in six weeks indicate levels of despair are rising among First Nations teens and young adults in the province. From hotlines and outreach programs to drama workshops, suicide prevention workers are trying every resource they can to turn back the tide of despair. Today, Winnipeg police will provide a cruiser escort for an aboriginal woman and her family who are holding a march to honour youth from all races and ethnic backgrounds who were murdered or committed suicide. The march starts at 11 a. m. at Brookside Boulevard at Mollard Road and ends at the Legislature. “ Some people don’t want to talk about suicide. But it’s not a disgrace. It’s nothing to be ashamed of,” said Candace Volk. Last year, her daughter Jenny Volk organized two other walks in memory of her cousin Hillary Angel Wilson, who was murdered. The bodies of Wilson and her friend Cherisse Houle were found a month apart in 2009. Volk said her daughter organized this march because she has lost a classmate, two friends, and another family friend to suicide. A growing sense of urgency over youth suicide was a factor that motivated an Assembly of Manitoba Chiefs decision this week to let television cameras film a sacred pipe ceremony on National Aboriginal Day Thursday. “ We’ve been here thousands of years and it’s important that the public see who we are. It’s time we no longer hide that and I think our young people need to see that,” AMC Grand Chief Derek Nepinak said. One elder at the ceremony marked the occasion by talking about his two grandsons who hanged themselves within six months of each other. Both teens, 16 and 18, were heavily addicted to prescription drugs, said elder Percy Houle. Teenagers are reckless and die because they don’t know they have anything to live for and nothing to give them pride, Houle said. That has to change, and it can if traditional customs are discussed and practiced more openly, Houle said. “ For 60 years, I carried this pipe in secret. No more. I’m bringing it out,” Houle said, gesturing to his pipe. Elmer Courchene, another elder at the filming, said young people have a right to feel proud of their heritage but if they don’t see it, they won’t use it. “ The pipe is our life and it means everything to us. It’s been handed down for thousands of years and is our connection to the Creator. It gives us direction that we can follow,” Courchene said. Aboriginal teens and youth make up one of the fastest- growing sectors in the province’s population, and demographics also single them out as the most vulnerable, with high foster care, addiction and crime rates. The on- reserve high school graduation rate is around 28 per cent, and unemployment rates are high. alexandra. paul@ freepress. mb. ca The grim numbers SINCE May, aboriginal suicide- prevention workers and leaders have identified five suicides among First Nations teens and young adults: . one 17- year- old girl and one 20- year- old man in the Interlake’s Fisher River Cree First Nation. . one man in his early 20s in neighbouring Peguis.
