Rollover kills ATV driver
In Brief
HANGING out with gangsters several
years ago left Oscar the Derbyan parrot
with a nasty vocabulary.
Oscar's language is cleaner now,
and her owners are decent, law- abiding
citizens. But she's gone missing
after escaping from her Sage Creek
home Friday evening.
Owners Brent Smith and Suzi Bonk
are asking the public to help them find
their beloved Oscar.
Oscar has a bright blue head, a
black mask around her eyes and
brilliant green feathers. Her chest is
mauve.
Smith said Oscar is friendly to
people and other birds even when
hungry and afraid.
" If someone sees her, they should
approach her slowly but confidently,
and put out their forearm," Smith
said.
" They should say ' step up birdie,'
or ' step up Oscar,' and then take her
inside of their house shut the door
behind them. Then call us and we'll
come get her right away."
Smith and Bonk have set up a Twitter
account under the account name @
OscartheParrot where people can get
updates on the search.
In 2001, Oscar escaped and spent
several hours outside during a frigid
December day before a stranger
found her hanging out with pigeons
outside the Manitoba Museum. Oscar
climbed onto the stranger's shoulder
and the pair boarded a bus to the
stranger's home, where Oscar dined
on peanuts.
That same night, someone broke
into the stranger's apartment, stole
Oscar and sold her.
Oscar was bought and sold a
number of times over the next four
months. Two of the exchanges were
between Manitoba- based gangs.
A Winnipeg police officer later
returned Oscar to her owners. She
picked up a few bad words while living
with gang members but was not
harmed otherwise.
Anyone with information about
Oscar is asked to phone Smith at 204-
296- 8204 or Bonk at 204- 230- 8341.
The couple is offering a $ 300 reward
for the safe return of Oscar.
