Winnipeg Free Press (Newspaper) - June 26, 2012, Winnipeg, Manitoba C M Y K PAGE B2 B 2 TUESDAY, JUNE 26, 2012 winnipegfreepress. com By Duncan Owen Local Heroes For more information visit our website, www. salisburyhouse. ca **** **** A round of applause for Carolyn Gray. There is probably no better person suited to dispel the myth of The Writer's Life - a solitary, quiet life, massaging words into art - than Carolyn Gray. As she talks animatedly about teaching at the Manitoba Theatre for Young People, teaching creative writing at Brandon University this fall, the new play she is directing for the upcoming Fringe Festival in Winnipeg, her writing or her upcoming trip to New York City to study the construction of pageant sized puppets, it is evident Carolyn is not waiting for the fickle finger of fame to tap her politely on her shoulder. The local writer, who won the John Hirsch Award for Most Promising New Writer at the 2008 Manitoba Book Awards, has written two plays; The Elmwood Visitation and North Main Gothic, and is currently working on two works of prose fiction. Over a piece of Wafer Pie recently, she says she is a North End Gal. " My Sals is the Burton Sals,", which means, if you are not fluent in Winnipegger, the Sals located at Main and Matheson and refers to an era when the Guess Who would frequent that location after rehearsals. She shows her North End pride when she mentions " The Guess Who used to practice one door down from me." Carolyn, who has studied at both the prestigious Pratt Institute in New York and the Emily Carr University in Vancouver received her B. A. from the University of Winnipeg. " I got pulled into a ( theatre) company, a group of really brilliant people and the experience was invaluable. We toured all over Canada," she says of her start in theatre. Now Carolyn, through her work at MTYP, is passing on her experiences to new generations, continuing Winnipeg's tradition as an arts heavy- weight. In fact, the show Carolyn is directing at this year's Fringe, for The Struts and Frets Players, is a local theatre company that grew from their time under Carolyn's instruction at MTYP. In July they will be performing ' Cupid and Psyche!', marking their fifth appearance at the Winnipeg Fringe. So a standing O for Carolyn, who through her work as a writer, teacher, director and performer helps to create a community from a city and weaves tapestries from words.. The man was driving a blue Dodge Dakota pickup truck on Highway 44 when his vehicle collided with a semitrailer truck loaded with wooden roof trusses at around 11: 30 a. m., said Sgt. Stu Evans. The semi immediately burst into flames, Evans said. The man driving the pickup died at the scene, while the driver of the semi scambled from his rig and was taken to Beausejour Hospital with non- life- threatening injuries. Evans said the truck drove into the path of the semi. Police had to divert traffic around the area onto a nearby service road for the afternoon. Beausejour is 46 kilometres northeast of Winnipeg. RCMP continue to investigate the crash. S ELKIRK - A man died Monday afternoon at the community's outdoor pool in Selkirk Park. The 44- year- old Selkirk man had lifted his five- year- old daughter onto his shoulders and the two were swimming in the deep end of the pool just after 1 p. m., said Randy Borsa, chief administrative officer of the City of Selkirk. One of the lifeguards noticed the little girl calling for help, and two lifeguards swam over to the girl and found her father submerged, Borsa said. The lifeguards lifted the man to the side of the pool and started medical assistance until paramedics took over. " It was a scary atmosphere. Everyone was just standing in silence while they did CPR on him," said witness David Atkins, who arrived on the scene after the man had been pulled out of the water. " Even after the ambulance pulled away, people stayed around the pool, kind of digesting everything." The man was rushed to Selkirk Hospital but did not survive. His name has not been released. The Selkirk Park Pool & Splash Pad is located at the north end of Selkirk on the banks of the Red River. RCMP said an autopsy in the coming days will determine the cause of death. Witnesses speculated the man might have suffered a heart attack. " The whole city is so shocked. We don't want to see anything like this happen to anybody," said Borsa. " I guess we would feel more relieved if it was a heart attack than a drowning, but it's still somebody that has passed away in our pool. It's tremendously sad." katherine. dow@ freepress. mb. ca Pickup truck collides with semi- trailer, killing driver Swimmer dies at Selkirk outdoor pool Man, 44, had daughter on his shoulders By Katherine Dow JOE BRYKSA / WINNIPEG FREE PRESS A lifeguard stands on the deck of Selkirk Park pool after a man died while swimming.
