Rose du Lac, Swan River, Winnipeg Careers VIENNA, Austria - Austrian police did not need sniffing dogs to locate a suspected heist of 9.5 tons of garlic. The Austria Press Agency says police stopped three overloaded and sagging vans about to cross into Hungary from Austria on Wednesday and found them packed to the roof with the pungent cargo. After questioning the five men in the vehicles, they were charged on suspicion of receiving stolen goods. Police say the garlic apparently came from Spain and estimate its value at $ 37,500. The men, all Romanian nationals, were not named in keeping with Austrian privacy laws. APA cites one officer as saying it was clear what the vans were carrying even before their doors were opened. " All three vehicles really stunk like garlic," he says. - The Associated Press Heavy garlic foils fleeing thieves COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - A raging wildfire destroyed dozens of houses overnight on Wednesday while thick smoke and intense, towering flames kept officials from learning the full scope of the damage to Colorado's second- largest city. The wildfire doubled in size overnight to about 62 square kilometres and over 32,000 residents were forced to evacuate, Colorado Springs emergency management director Brett Waters said. - The Associated Press B EIRUT - Gunmen attacked a pro- government TV station early Wednesday morning near the Syrian capital of Damascus, killing seven employees in the latest barrage of violence as world powers prepare for a high- level meeting that the U. S. hopes will be a turning point in the crisis. Invitations to Saturday's gathering in Geneva were sent by special envoy Kofi Annan to the five permanent members of the United Nations Security Council, including Syrian allies Russia and China, but not to regional players Iran and Saudi Arabia, who support opposing sides of the conflict. The UN said Wednesday that the conflict is descending into sectarian warfare. Annan's efforts to broker a peace plan failed earlier this year. Syrian President Bashar Assad has so far appeared impervious to world pressure and has warned the international community from meddling in the crisis. He said this week that his country is in " a genuine state of war," an increasingly common refrain. Assad denies there is any popular will behind the 16- month uprising, saying terrorists are driving a foreign conspiracy to destroy the country. Activists say more than 14,000 people have been killed in the violence. " What happened today is a massacre," Information Minister Omran al- Zoebi said. He blamed terrorists, the term the government uses for rebels. Activists blamed the attack on elite Syrian troops who defected from the regime Tuesday. The allegation could not be independently confirmed. Much of the violence has been sanctioned by the Syrian government to crush dissent. But rebel fighters are launching increasingly deadly attacks on regime targets, and several suicide attacks this year suggest al- Qaida or other extremists are joining the fray. " Where previously victims were targeted on the basis of their being pro- or anti- government, the Commission of Inquiry has recorded a growing number of incidents where victims appear to have been targeted because of their religious affiliation," a panel of UN- appointed human rights experts said in a report released in Geneva. Paulo Sergio Pinheiro, head of a UN panel conducting an international investigation of allegations of human rights abuses in Syria, called the country a " crime scene." UN deputy envoy for Syria, Jean- Marie Guehenno, said violence has " reached or even surpassed" levels seen before an April cease- fire. - The Associated Press Colorado wildfire grows, 32,000 evacuated Syrian TV station attacked as high- level UN meeting looms By Elizabeth A.
